Brian-

Attached please find a sample METS record that makes use of an AMDID attribute on the metsHdr element. In the case of NDNP, the AMDID is used to reference two dmdSecs. The first is a digital signature for the METS record. (We chose to use XML digital signatures in their standard representation, rather than transform to PREMIS.) The second is a PREMIS record for the METS record. (The PREMIS record is used to indicate some significant properties of the METS records, viz., ways in which the record has been allowed to deviate from the profile.)

Let me know how I can be of further assistance.

Best.
Justin

The person at LC interested in METS and digital signatures is Justin
Littman. Justin is working on the National Digital Newspaper Project. Nate
Trail told that someone on the Board was asking...

Hi Justin,

I'm on the METS Editorial Board and I've been assigned to investigate
digital signatures and METS based on a recommendation for a change to
the METS schema which was attributed to you.

Your request, as I understand it, is to put an AMDID attribute on the
mets:metsHdr element. The Board is trying to be more systematic
regrading changes to the schema, and it was decided at the last Board
meeting that -- rather than just adding in this attribute without really
seeing an example of how it would be used -- that we should form a
signatures group to come up with a more comprehensive recommendation for
the use of XML Signature in METS.

No one on the METS list seemed interested in being on such a group; so
I've been reading a bunch of old PREMIS emails and documents about
signatures. At the very least, I've learned from them that we are
talking really about digital signatures that happen to be applied to XML
Documents, not necessarily 'XML Signatures' from the w3c.

What I would like to know at this point is if you could send me some of
the METS that rumor has it you have created that need/use this attribute
in order to indicate that the signature is metadata about the METS
document itself. (From the National Digital Newspaper NDIIP project)

Then I would like to work with you to prepare a short proposal for the
change request that we can send to the METS list in advance of this
Fall's Board meeting.

Thanks for any input you might have into this issue.
