Discussion Items

Planning for next face-to-face meeting

  • The consensus was that the iPRES meeting in Boston would be the best venue, https://ipres2018.org/.
  • Most people attending the board meeting indicated that they might be able to attend.
  • There was also some discussion about whether the Board should adopt the iPRES conference as its official venue for all future face-to-face meetings. Apparently this is the PREMIS Board's official venue for meetings.
  • Based on feedback from the previous meeting in Kyoto, the Board would like to present a METS Tutorial at this meeting.
  • Tutorial proposal are due to the conference organizers by April 16.
  • Karin suggested that the METS Tutorial could be based off of the outline used for the recent PREMIS Tutorial. She will provide a copy for the Board to review. (See emails from Karin to the Board dated 2/16 and 2/23.)
  • There was also a suggestion to hold a METS Implementation Fair. Bertrand suggested that this could be combined with the PREMIS Implementation Fair. Karin has discussed this with the PREMIS Board and will be developing a joint proposal. (See email from Karin to the Board dated 2/23.)

Web site and schema maintenance activities

  • For improved portability and accessibility, a PDF version of the METS Primer needs to be created to replace the current MS Word version which is available from the METS LoC web site. Tom will do this and contact Glenn at LoC to do the web site revisions.
  • Tom will upload the METS Profile XML Schema into the Board's Git repository.
  • Tom will also update the METS Profile XML Schema to add xml:lang attributes to any element intended to hold human-readable text.

Other business

  • Andreas will update the Trello Board, https://trello.com/b/J0mtVuKg/meeting-planning, to add columns for upcoming meetings.
  • Bertrand invited METS Board members to become involved in an ongoing discussion related to a METS Profiles for optical media images, such as ISO images of audio disks, http://qanda.digipres.org/1146/where-store-metadata-about-optical-media-sector-layout-premis, especially regarding how disk sector layouts might be represented. Related to this there was some discussion about expanding the allowable values for the BETYPE and EXTTYPE enums associated with the BEGIN, END, and EXTENT attributes of the element. The Board decided to wait for an official schema change request before taking up the issue.
