== Personal Information== ||Position || Postdoctoral Fellow ||Email || [email protected] ||Research Area || Socio-Technical Studies ||Phone or fax || +45 72 18 52 51 ||Location || ITU 3C ||Description || Steffen holds a Phd in Anthropology and Ethnography from Aarhus University (obtained 2010). His specialization is state formation, political leadership and democracy in Papua New Guinea in the Western Pacific. This he studied as part of his PhD but also through a postdoctoral grant from the Danish Council of Independent Research (2010-2012). br More specifically the research has focused on counting practices in both the census and in national elections as a way to understand cultural change and the role of the state. Key events have been the parliamentary elections in 2007 and 2012 and the national census in 2011. These events displayed people's direct participation in the practices laid out by the state, what counted to them as political legitimacy, and what role they imagined the state to play in their lives. br Steffen's contribution to DemTech will move along similar lines of inquiry founded on ethnographic methodology and anthropological analysis of the way voting technologies are used, and how they are embedded in various social and institutional arenas.
