OpenSCALING project updates

Progress on pull requests, https://github.com/ibpsa/modelica-ibpsa/pulls

Participants

| Filip Jorissen, Builtwins | Jelger Jansen, KU leuven | Alessandro Maccarini, Aalborg University | Fabian Wuellhorst, RTWH Aachen | Lucas Verleyen, KU Leuven | Massimo Cimmino, Polytechnique Montreal | Michael Wetter, LBNL | Casper Fu, LBNL | Ettore Zanetti, LBNL

Minutes

  • Discussion on radiator model that assumes constant fraction for radiation and convection. Fabian tried to change parameters for radiator model, but it did not work. A RTWH student may investigate developing a model where the heat transfer coefficient are non-linear.
  • Changes to the weekly schedule were merged.
  • Massimo developed a new borehole model where there could be clusters of zone independently operated, this can be used to simulate bore-thermal storage system. The main change is that g-functions cannot be used anymore, instead is a finite discretization model, increasing computational time PR on Buildings reference paper link.

ATES model

Alessandro met with coworker that is now working on detailed model implementation. Validation results expected in few weeks.

ISO 13790 models

Alessandro finalized the PR, Jelger will take a look and think if he can review. He is currently busy with is PhD.

PV collector, battery and electrical component models

No updates.

Modular heat pump

PR ready to be merged. Issue with structural record parameters in Opemodelica solved. Fabian found a new warning message generated by the mover model at initialization, Casper to take a look.

New state selection

https://github.com/ibpsa/modelica-ibpsa/issues/1412

Michael work on model initialization? Difference of pressure instead of absolute pressure (in theory is better, in numerical simulation it seems inconclusive it depends on the models, scaling seems to work better) Comparison speed vs accuracy? (speed and if models actually run). Maybe use bounded attribute of real variables.

OCT has been updated and it is a work in progress.

Solar Thermal Model

PR merged, everything should be now moved to IBPSA. Jelger will take a look.

Integration of new models into the library

New models to be developed/integrate:

  • Discussions about others and future development, such as
    • APPROVED
      • enthalpy and energy recovery wheel (Oakridge national lab is working on a model for the Buildings that could be integrated)
      • validation of models (No updates)
      • CDL integration (No updates)
      • preconfigured controls (No updates)
    • NEED MORE DISCUSSION
      • thermal storage (No updates)
      • better dynamic ground coupling of long district pipes (PR merged into Buildings, to be moved to IBPSA)
      • CHP and organic Rankine cycle (Casper is working on a PR for Buildings library)
      • more geothermal (horizontal loop, slinky loop, others) (Massimo could look into specific modelling efforts that have been done by co-workers)

OpenSCALING project updates

Kick-off meeting in November. If interested in an advisory board work with Oliver Lenord to issue NDA contract. Come up with requirements:
data source large models (compilation, simulation, optimization, UQ) provide library of models computationally expensive ones numerically problematic ones (see also https://ibpsa.github.io/modelica-challenge-problems/)

New action items

Previous action items

  • Discussion on radiator model that assumes constant fraction for radiation and convection. This is not the case at lower temperatures (issue with retrofits where heat pumps are used). Fabian may take a look at possible improvements on the model to address this issue.
  • Discussion on weekly schedule format, Drop boilerplate header double tabn(x,x). Filip to work on implementation.
