[Paige] Week 1 Reading Response

I found the notion of referring to new technology as 'dreaming' objects instead of 'smart' objects very interesting. I never understood the concept of calling high functioning devices 'smart'; they are not sentient and do not have intelligence, only the programmed functionality that humans put into them. So the humans who created them are smart, but the devices themselves are just devices.

The idea of analyzing the electromagnetic spectrum and thinking of imagining electronics communicating and interacting with each other through radiation is an interesting idea that opens a lot of possibilities. A visualization of this would be amazing. Imagining a world designed for all objects to interact with each other in this way would also be amazing to think about.

More generally speaking, I think the idea and question of technology helping or hindering humanity should be considered. Obviously, the example given of a man who married his television and had a wedding ceremony is ridiculous, though not surprising. Devices have overcome their original functions and shaped society in a way that I don't think anyone envisioned. It is impossible to have 'smart' devices that don't heavily impact our behavior and everyday life.
