[Michelle] Week 1 Response
LOVE HONOUR AND OBEY:
Section 01: DIY Realities and a possibly nonsensical ramble
The design of this book is already filling me with so much joy.
Notopia Techno utopian, future forecasters, pre- existent reality, dystopian vision
Beta testers: tweaking and adjusting reality on a day-to-day basis. They derive enjoyment from electronic materiality by rejecting what is offered and constructing their own.
Home improvement television shows compared to the future accessibility of personalizing our own electronic devices with the equivalent ease of repainting a room
When objects dream…it is in line with the realm of my work to consider objecthood in a Hertzian sense. The object is important insofar as it relates to the human interaction associated with it. Writing about the electronic object as though it has humanness and isn’t strictly a mechanization allows a user to engage with the object on a more obsessive level. Pet rocks led to tomagotchis turns into furry cases for your smart phone. Treating an object like a companion is the way of the future. People form attachments to objects they can see themselves in. The personal attachment exists in the capabilities of their electronic devices, but the object itself is a shell to that realm of information that can be accessed on multiple platforms, outside of the device. The device is also mutable and constantly changing. It would be interesting if the plight of consumerism could go against their own agenda and rely on a fixed design. I wonder if that would give the singular object more importance.
