Game Art Style Guide
Please adhere to this Art Style guide, and if in doubt consult with the design committee.
The assets chosen for use in the game going forward are detailed below. The titles are suggestions for which assets to be used for particular game elements, with the intention of keeping the game look and feel as coherent as possible.
To discuss use of assets and propose changes, please contact the design committee on their Discord server channel.
Some of these assets are PAID (but carry licenses that allow use in projects) and may have been paid for by individuals so please contact the named individuals for the assets. The use of paid assets has been discussed with Guowei and we have approval for their use, though this will not be considered a 'contribution' to the project for assessment purposes (As with any design elements, this is a Software Engineering course. If in doubt, refer to the ECP as always).
The decision has been made to use the backdrops in the Desolate Places pack, namely the Dusty Moon, Hidden Desert, Misty Rocks and possibly Cloudy Mountains. Some of these images may need adapting to create enough space for the map area.
The below concept art gives an indication of the in-game proposed layout. While some rock formations/mountains are in the main game area, they are not intended to be obstacles. A possible feature that could be implemented is having the terrain modify the movement of mobs, or make it harder to hit mobs (e.g., mobs moving through rocky terrain may move slower but be less susceptible to damage)
The GUI elements chosen to be used throughout the game are in the GUI Essentials Pack, specifically the 'Glass' theme (Creative Commons Licence).
This asset pack will include menu elements, frames, buttons, health bars, a font, pointers and selector brackets/boxes.
This is a paid theme, which The-AhmadAA has paid for, please contact him for access to the resources, and cite Crusenho when using these assets.
Defensive towers, passive defensive structures, and resource extraction towers (mines) will primarily be depicted using the following assets from the itch.io creator penusbmic's Sci-Fi series pack 5 and pack 6
As with towers, mobs and bosses will be mostly visualised using assets created by itch.io creator penusbmic. Some examples of mob assets that are available for use are shown below, and are all part of the Sci-Fi series. The series has 12 character packs and each pack contains one free asset. Packs 5 and 6 contain assets which will be used for towers but that still means that there are 10 free assets available for use.
There is also a paid Boss asset by the same creator which would be a great addition to the game from the Dark Series called the Tarnished Widow Boss
Another boss asset (free) by penusbmic is the Bringer of Death
There are other assets by the same creator available, feel free to peruse the penusbmic catalog and propose their use.
As of sprint 2, there are moves to include human 'Engineers' into the game. They may be visualised using this Sci-Fi animated army squad asset pack
This is also a paid asset pack - update to come regarding purchase of this asset pack or replacement wiht a free asset
All projectiles and explosion effects will need to be taken from the following packs:
Examples
The assets in the [48 Free Minerals Pixel Art Icons]I(https://free-game-assets.itch.io/48-free-minerals-pixel-art-icons-pack) pack will allow a choice of minerals/ores for use as in-game currency
Please adhere to this Art Style guide, and if in doubt consult with the design committee.
