Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is a Hackathon?
an event where a group of people join together to design and create something in a short burst of time.
Who is the target audience?
anyone interested in health research or coding. You might be a UCL academic, or anyone in the general public who is interested in these topics and in working with others.
Am I allowed to join?
You must be over 18 and willing to follow The 8 Rules of Code Club
But I've never done a Hackathon before!
that's fine! Most of our members haven't. We're a beginner-friendly event 😄
Okay, but I can't even code!
not a problem! Even if you don't have any coding experience, you can still contribute by submitting ideas, writing a story, creating a poster, managing the project, and so on. In fact, this will be an excellent opportunity to work with and learn from professionals with coding expertise!
How do I sign-up?
you MUST register on Eventbrite AND fill in the Google sign-up form to attend.
Do I need to stay for the whole event?
ideally, yes. The pre-event will be important to attend, to get an introduction to the Hackathon and to meet your team. If you need to dip in and out of the main event during the remaining 2 days, that's fine. Just let us and your team know, so that the workload can be shared equally between your team and to make sure at least one member is able to present on the final day.
What do I need for the Hackathon?
an internet connection and a device to access the online event and work on your project.
What technology platform will we use to access the Hackathon?
we will use Zoom for the Hackathon and gather.town for the project showcase (where you'll present your outputs in a virtual poster room). Web browser versions or apps can be used to access the event. We recommend that you familiarise yourself with gather.town by trying their walkthrough demo.
What is the required team size?
3-5 people
I don't have a team.
that's fine! You don't need to have a team to sign-up. We will sort everyone into teams. If you want to sign-up with a team, please specify your team name in the Google Form when you sign up. If you sign-up up after teams have been formed, we will find you a team at the Pre-Hackathon event.
Can I make a team with my friends / colleagues?
yes, but you must have at least 1 member who is a UCL academic. We encourage you to create some diverse and inclusive teams, e.g. members with different skills, backgrounds, experiences, to maximise peer-learning.
Can I invite someone to this Hackathon?
yes, they'll need to register on Eventbrite to get a ticket & fill in the Google sign-up form to attend.
What is the maximum number of participants?
we roughly have space for 100 participants, this may vary.
What will happen at the Hackathon?
please read the Home page of the wiki, which outlines the schedule. Team-building will happen on Friday 25th. After 2 days of hacking in your team, you will present your output in a virtual poster room, and will have a chance to win a prize for best project.
Who owns the Intellectual Property (IP)?
you will have to decide this within your team.
What is health informatics?
health informatics is a branch of science that applies computational techniques to medical and health data to tackle problems.
What is the IHI Code Club?
find out about us on our website.
Can I join the UCL Code Clubs?
if you are affiliated with UCL, then yes. Please see our website more details.
What do I do if I have a technical issue?
if your team can't help you, or if you can't find a solution online, please try to contact one of the organisers if you can. If you have an internet issue, then we suggest you to try to contact your team or wait till the problem stops. We won't penalise you if this happens.
Who can I contact for any other questions / help?
contact the Hackathon organisers at [email protected] - we'll make ourselves known and will be around during the event 😀
