Art
XMultiply art is based on its theme, a microscopic spaceship fighting aliens inside a human body, so it has a futuristic style combined with a dark and oppresive color palette to make it feel like the "horror shooting game" it was designed to be. Despite that, there is no sense of flying inside the organs of a human body.
We couldn't find the original concept art work, but with some research we have found some flyers of the game and discovered that this game was based on a film named Fantastic Voyage, we have done a little compilation of images related with it:
If we take a look to the bosses of the game, we can see a relation with some mythological monsters:
Boss | Creature |
---|---|
Seems that this alien is based on a monster of the cthulhu mythology named Hastur | |
This alien could be considered a version of a Behemot, considering that it has the form of a dragon | |
This alien has the face of a common turtle | |
We can't really know what this boss represents, but It seems that is a cyborg with a head of a spider | |
This alien has the name of Hidra but it's form is more likely of a Leviathan | |
This alien has some interesting parts, first of all the head at the top and on the sides it has what it seems two lumps with eyes | |
This alien represents the Baphomet, an enigmatic figure with a horned goat's head |
To get all the game sprites we used the MAME emulator. With it, we used commands to get the palette of sprites, which were in differet colors and divided in sections, so we screnshotted everything we needed and take it to photoshop, were we united the parts and get every sprite together. Then we converted it to .png. You can see all the sprites here.
In this game we have 7 different levels, a title screen and the credits.
In the beginning of the level, you can see a machine dropping out the spaceship. The level is divided in two parts separated by a "mini-boss" that blocks your way and you must defeat to continue. The map has a changing color background (blue-purple) and red and white "rocks" that define your path. Enemies are colored in a way that fits well with the backgroung. Finally, the boss of this stage is a dragon-like creature that shots red bubbles which explode into blue-pink projectiles.

The second map is a giant green and brown creature in a completely black space. Enemies appear around the monster which are similar in style with the monster itself. You have to destroy parts of the alien in order to get to its head, the second boss, that shoots lasers and charges towards you.

The third stage looks like a cave, with stalactites and stalagmites in its background. The walls of the cave are like volcanoes (with eyes inserted on them) that shoot projectiles and enemies. This map also has different parts, the one already expained and a red raising terrain where the player has to defeat large snake enemies. The boss zone is a closed square where you fight four turtle heads located at the corners of the screen which fire blue bouncing lasers.

The fourth stage has a totally black background and the terrain is defined by human spines and spheres that change colors between blue, green and red. This stage adds bouncing rocks that block your way and destroy you when hit. There are also enemies that resemble columns and the player must destroy them by shooting in their central gem to pass through. The boss is a "cyborg" with a mechanical hand that shoots purple projectiles. It separates its head from the body in order to be able to damage it, as it is the only weak spot.

The fifth stage has a blue background and the walls are bones and flesh. In this level there are red balls blocking the way. Sometimes, the balls are holding purple crystals that block the player. There is another part that is just stalagmites that drip white drops that damages the player if it hits. The next part is a white lake, where the little drops, once they touch the lake, explode into more droplets. The boss is a snake made of bones that comes out the lake and fires projectiles with a tadpole shape.

The sixth stage background changes colors between red-green and blue-purple. The walls resemble blue veins. The enemies are yellow flies, clusters that contains eggs that opens into anenemy if not defeated. Then it comes a descending white terrain with skulls in its backround, enemy waves, and moving platforms. When you arrive at the bottom of the level, you enter a "room" where the boss appears. It is like a pair of lungs with a horned head on the top that summons little monsters that bounce arround and shoots red projectiles.

The seventh stage background is formed by white, red and yellow bones, some of them with color spheres like in stage four. In this stage, you face waves of fast yellow enemies that cover the whole screen and blue bubbles that fire two projectiles. Then you enter a robotic-like corridor where you receive a lot of power ups. Finally, you arrive at the last boss fight, that resembles the demon Baphomet with skulls orbiting it and holding a blue egg. When the goat dies, the blue egg lets ot four enemies that bounce really fast and shoot horizontal projectiles.
