Adding Hands and Scribes
The following assumes that you are already familiar with the Admin interface. If not then please read The Admin Interface first. It also assumes that you have already created your Item (e.g. manuscript) for this Hand. If not then please follow the instructions in Adding Items (Manuscripts) first.
The DigiPal database contains a large number of fields, many of which are very specific and most of which are not necessary for basic use of the framework. The documentation here describes only the essential fields, so any boxes on forms which are not described can be safely ignored.
Before you can start annotating your image, you must first add one or more Hand records to your manuscript. The easiest way to do this is from the Item Part record.
- Go to the Item Part change list, and click on the appropriate Item Part to see the Edit Form.
- Scroll down to the Hands section.
- Enter the Label for this Hand. The Label is free text and is used as some form of identifier which users will see in the search results and other lists. It may simply be 'Main Hand', 'Hand A', or similar.
- Enter the Number (Num) of the hand. This is simply used to order the hands within the same Item Part. For instance, you may wish to number main Hands in the order in which they appear in the manuscript, followed by later annotators.
- If you have already entered one or more Images of pages with this Hand on it, then select these from the list of Available Images' and click on the blue right arrow to move them to the 'Chosen Images' list. If you do not have any images yet then don't worry as this can be done at a later stage (see Adding Images).
- You will probably want to associate a Scribe with this Hand. This can be used to link different Hands to the same individual (see further Hands and Scribes). To do this, either select an existing Scribe from the drop-down list, or create a new Scribe by clicking on the blue '+' and entering the appropriate information.
