A Note on Preferred Labels

The consistency of the name form in the TEI Header is paramount, as the name is used for the faceted search on the browse page. Therefore, a minor variation of name form in the header for two TEI files will result in two different entries in the name facet.

  • Nomisma.org: use the preferred label under English
  • Pleiades: copy and paste the main heading at the top, e.g., Antiochia/Theoupolis.
  • Geonames: Place names are formed by Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2).
    • Cities in the United States and Canada: City Name (Long State Abbreviation), for example, Springfield (Mass.), New York (N.Y.)
    • Cities elsewhere: City Name (Country), for example, Paris (France), Berlin (Germany)
  • VIAF: Use the Library of Congress (identified by the U.S. flag) heading if available, otherwise choose best available option. Jefferson, Thomas, 1743-1826
  • ANS Biographies: copy and paste the main heading, e.g., Newell, Edward Theodore, 1886-1941
  • Wikidata: Copy and paste the main heading, Caligula
