Developed and tested on:

LAMP

  • Ubuntu 18.04
  • Apache/2.4.34 (Ubuntu)
  • MySQL 5.7.25-0ubuntu0.18.10.2
  • PHP 7.2

and later on on Docker

Horse Racing Simulator Game implemented using PHP and relational database

  • Each horse has 3 stats: speed, strength, endurance
  • Each stat ranges from 0.0 to 10.0
  • A horse's speed is their base speed (5 m/s) + their speed stat (in m/s)
  • Endurance represents how many hundreds of meters they can run at their best speed, before the weight of the jockey slows them down
  • A jockey slows the horse down by 5 m/s, but this effect is reduced by the horse's strength * 8 as a percentage
  • Each race is run by 8 randomly generated horses, over 1500m
  • Up to 3 races are allowed at the same time

The Includes

  • A "create race" button which generates a new race of 8 random horses
  • A button "progress" which advances all races by 10 "seconds" until all horses in the race have completed 1500m
  • Any currently running races, showing distance covered, horse position, current time
  • The last 5 race results (top 3 positions and times to complete 1500m)
  • The best ever time, and the stats of the horse that generated it

Docker Stuff

Config

Check whether all is well in the docker composer config file (docker-compose.yml). docker-compose config

Build

docker-compose up

Rebuild

Dockerfile changes will not reflect unless we re-build everything.

docker-compose up --build

Interacting with Docker containers

Run a command inside a container with docker exec. To logon to MySQL, use MySQL image name, for that run docker ps -a. The name of the container is mysql-server-80:

docker exec -it mysql-server-80 bash -l

Import DB

docker exec -i mysql-server-80 mysql -u root -p.rootpasswd. horse_racing_simulator < ./sql/horse_racing_simulator.sql

Turn Off

docker-compose down

Turn Off all Docker containers:

docker stop $(docker ps -a -q)

Delete all containers

docker rm $(docker ps -a -q)

Delete all images

docker rmi $(docker images -q)

The official command to remove all unused data (including volumes without containers) will be with docker 1.13

docker system prune

If you want to limit to volumes alone, [removing only unused volumes][1]:

docker volume prune

You also have docker image prune, docker container prune

To remove everything for this project:

docker system prune -a
WARNING! This will remove:
  - all stopped containers
  - all networks not used by at least one container
  - all images without at least one container associated to them
  - all build cache

Are you sure you want to continue? [y/N] y
