<p><title>SMBL</title> has used the <gi>head</gi> element to provide summary
information about the manuscript or manuscript part.</p>
<p>An auto-generated paragraph describing the masnucript contents has been
inserted into the <gi>head</gi> section of each file. <egXML
xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/Examples">
inserted into the <gi>head</gi> element as a <gi>note</gi> with a
<att>type</att> attribute whose value is <val>contents-note</val>.
This note provides the title(s) of the first five top-level <gi>msItem</gi> elements.
Their values are copied from the <gi>title</gi> element of each item; final elipsis
indicates that there are more than five top-level manuscript items. Finally, the
total number of <gi>msItem</gi> elements, including descendant manuscript items,
is included in the note.
</p>
<p>See the following example, from <ref target="https://bl.syriac.uk/ms/1023">https://bl.syriac.uk/ms/1023</ref>:
<egXML xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/Examples">
<note type="contents-note">This manuscript contains: Severus. The Hymns of Severus, etc., here only 159 (ܩܢܛ) in number.;
Supplicatory hymns of every kind, arranged according to the eight tones.; Cantus ad Magnificat, arranged according to the eight tones.;
Additional hymns, arranged according to the eight tones.; Additional.; ...
In total, including sub-sections, this manuscript contains 26 items.</note>
</egXML>
</p>
<p>For composite manuscripts, the contents note will instead direct the reader to
the individual parts for a summary of the contents.</p>
<p>Following the contents note, the <gi>head</gi> element may have a number of
<gi>listRelation</gi> elements.</p>
<p><title>SMBL</title> has recorded the genre classification provided in Wright's <title>Catalogue</title>
in a <gi>listRelation</gi> element with <att>type</att> whose value is <val>Wright-BL-Taxonomy</val>.
The taxonomy is recorded in a child <gi>relation</gi> element given a <att>name</att> attribute of <val>dcterms:type</val>
and a <att>ref</att> attribute of <val>http://purl.org/dc/terms/type</val>. The manuscript or part URI
is given as the value of the <att>active</att> attribute. A corresponding <att>xml:id</att> attribute value from the
<gi>category</gi> in the <gi>taxonomy</gi> element is referenced as the value of the <att>passive</att> attribute.
Finally, the human-readable label from the same <gi>category</gi> element is used as a text node of the relation's child
<gi>desc</gi> element.
</p>
<p>An example of Wright's taxonomy encoded in the <gi>head</gi> element:</p>
<p>
<egXML xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/Examples">
<listRelation type="Wright-BL-Taxonomy">
<relation name="dcterms:type" ref="http://purl.org/dc/terms/type" active="https://bl.syriac.uk/ms/1020" passive="#choral">
<desc>Choral Books</desc>
</relation>
</listRelation>
</egXML>
</p>
<p>For composite manuscripts, which contain one or more <gi>msPart</gi> elements,
the manuscript record as well as each individual part will have a <gi>listRelation</gi>
element defining the part-to-whole relationships between the composite manuscript and its parts.</p>
<p>The <gi>listRelation</gi> element has been given a <att>type</att> attribute with the values
<val>composite-to-parts</val> or <val>part-to-composite</val>. A child <gi>desc</gi> element
provides a human-readable explanation of the list of relations. It is followed by a series of
<gi>relation</gi> elements that define the part-to-whole or whole-to-part relationships.</p>
<p>The <gi>relation</gi> element includes <att>active</att> and <att>passive</att>
attributes whose values are the SMBL URIs for the composite manuscript and the specific manuscript part.
Each element also includes a <att>name</att> attribute and <att>ref</att> attribute
that define the relationship. The <att>active</att>, <att>passive</att>, and <att>ref</att> attributes can be
understood as a triple, so in the example below one migh read:
https://bl.syriac.uk/ms/100 has-unspecified-codicological-part https://bl.syriac.uk/ms/101.
Finally, a child <gi>desc</gi> element provides a human-readable label consisting of
the shelfmark, and folios if applicable, of the composite or part referenced in the <att>passive</att> attribute.
</p>
<p><title>SMBL</title> has used the following values for the <att>name</att> and <att>ref</att> attributes for
<val>composite-to-parts</val> type <gi>listRelation</gi> elements:</p>
<p>

<p>Notes for Review Editors (2024)</p>
<p>Please ignore any errors in the <gi>head</gi> element and its summary.
These will be regenerated by a script at a later stage. Note: This

<p>Divergences from Consolidated Schema:</p>
<p><title>SMBL</title> has used the <gi>head</gi> element differently than the Consolidated schema
and has not provided a summary title or origin place and date information. Instead, we have used
dedicated <gi>note</gi> and <gi>listRelation</gi> elements to record summary information about the
manuscript and part records.</p>

item, the <gi>head</gi> element should provide (1) a brief descriptive
title (2) place of origin if known (3) date of origin. If the latter two
