I think it qualifies well to be backported to 1.2

I think we'd only do another 1.2 release if there was a critical bug that needed to be urgently patched, and in that case we'd only want the minimal required changes to go into the patch release. For a non-critical bug like this I think the next minor version is the right place for it, with no additional backporting required.
