MicMac is a free open-source (Cecill-B licence) photogrammetric software for 3D reconstruction. Initially it developed with the objective to serve needs of the experts and researchers, over the course of time and the growing interest of adjacent domains (e.g. architecture, archeology, forestry etc.), it has become a tool for non-expert users too.
MicMac, as a photogrammetric tool, stresses the metrological aspect of the reconstruction problem, and provides tools typically unavailable in existing software alternatives, for instance:
- access to intermediary results in open data formats allowing to interact with the processing chain at any desired stage,
- qualitative evaluation of the results via quality indicators (e.g. bundle adjustment residuals, covariance matrices, parameter’s sensitivity, correlation images),
- a wide range of camera calibration models, two-dimensional dense image matching for deformation studies, processing of frame cameras and pushbroom sensors, processing of scanned analogue images,
- architecture adapted to big datasets.
There are no limits as to the 3D scene apt for reconstruction (except the cases where photogrammetry should not work, e.g. on transparent surfaces), and the end products are delivered in an arbitrary or any desired coordinate system.
