Preserving a version of LWOTC in your local mods

If you're worried about a future update breaking your campaign, follow these instructions to keep playing the version you have right now.

Before you start, be aware that weird things may happen if you have multiple versions of LWOTC in your mods, even if one is not activated. Here's an example of one such case with 1.0.5 and 1.1 beta. Choose one version and remove the other.

  1. If you're not yet using AML, for your own sake, please start doing so now. You can get it here.
  2. You need a directory for local mods. If you don't have one yet, create it under your game install directory. Its path will most likely end in something like
steamapps\common\XCOM 2\XCom2-WarOfTheChosen\XComGame\Mods

Create the directory Mods if it doesn't exist yet. Keep the explorer window open, you'll need it soon.

  1. You need to make AML aware of the local mod directory. Open AML's Options > Settings... and Add the local mod directory to Mod Directories if it's not there yet.
  2. Look for Long War of the Chosen in AML's list of mods. Right-click it and select Show in Explorer. You'll end up in a directory that ends in 268500/2683996590. Move 2683996590 to Mods by dragging and dropping it. You should end up with a directory that ends in something like
steamapps\common\XCOM 2\XCom2-WarOfTheChosen\XComGame\Mods\2683996590

with LWOTC content inside it.

  1. In AML, do File > Search for new mods. The LWOTC you moved into local mods should appear on your list of mods.
  2. Close AML.
  3. Using the Steam client, unsubscribe from the Steam version of LWOTC.
  4. Start AML. You should now have only one copy of LWOTC, and that copy should be in your local mods. Activate it, start XCOM 2, and play with it a little bit to check if everything's working as before.
