Welcome to the OpenAccess_EPUB wiki!
OpenAccess_EPUB endeavors to support conversion of OpenAccess academic journalism into ePub e-books. This format has the capacity to support greater accessibility for those with reading disabilities, can provide a more comfortable and adaptable experience for reading and annotating, and maintains a level of hypertextuality comparable to online browser presentations.
Though the software won't always be specific to PLoS Journals, for now its development has been focused on providing conversion for PLoS content. PLoS publishes XML versions of its articles, which can then be converted to ePub by OpenAccess_EPUB. OpenAccess_EPUB is an ambitious project that needs help in many forms. Those involved in digital publishing and/or OpenAccess journalism are welcomed to offer insight and wisdom for good practice and implementation of the program. Python developers interested in learning about digital publishing, accessibility of science, and open source collaboration are desired. Above all, OpenAccess_EPUB needs users to try it out and comment about how it works, where it fails, and how to improve it.
A guide to Getting Started with OpenAccess_EPUB
How to use Collection Mode
If you would like to read some articles which have already been converted to ePub, you can download some from my Dropbox Public Folder at http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6424897/index.html A simple and easy way to read them is to install EPUBReader as a Firefox extension. Another good reading system is Calibre which has a lot more features.
