Shortname

The shortname is used to reference the dataset on the IPT or GitHub (it is part of the URL). It should be lowercase, hyphenated and stable. It cannot be changed once the dataset is created. For occurrence datasets the shortname generally starts with the name of the originating database, so datasets of the same origin appear together (meetnetten-, vis-). The shortname always ends with the dataset type (-occurrences or -checklist). The use of -events has been discontinued, because datasets might change format (Occurrence Core vs Event Core).

watervogels-occurrences # db + occurrences
vis-inland-occurrences # db + subset + occurrences
meetnetten-amfibieen-fuiken-occurrences # db + subset + subset + occurrences
alien-fishes-checklist # topic + checklist

Title

The title is a human readable name for the dataset, succinctly describing its scope and with capitalization where necessary. It always ends with the geographic scope (... in Flanders, Belgium). For occurrence datasets the title generally starts with the name of the originating database, followed by space hyphen space, so datasets of the same origin appear together (Meetnetten.be - ..., VIS - ..., Waarnemingen.be - ...).

Watervogels - Wintering waterbirds in Flanders, Belgium # watervogels-occurrences
VIS - Fishes in inland waters in Flanders, Belgium # vis-inland-occurrences
Meetnetten.be - Fyke counts for Amphibia in Flanders, Belgium # meetnetten-amfibieen-fuiken-occurrences
Checklist of non-native freshwater fishes in Flanders, Belgium # alien-fishes-checklist

Data license

All INBO datasets are published under Creative Commons Zero (see data policy). For other publishing organizations, this should be discussed, but note that GBIF only allows three licenses and that CC BY-NC does technically not meet the requirements of open data (as it excludes certain use).

Public domain (CC0 1.0)

Description

The description acts as the abstract for the dataset: it should allow the user to understand its origin, scope, and terms of use. It is often the only descriptive metadata that appears on metadata portals, such as PURE or the Flemish Open Data Portal.

The description is divided in 4 paragraphs:

Paragraph Content Status
1 Description of the dataset Required
2 Generalized and/or withheld information Share if available
3 Terms of use Required
4 Project/funding acknowledgement Strongly recommended

Paragraph 1

Paragraph 1 describes the dataset and has the following structure:

  • First sentence: Dataset title is a x type dataset published by y. Reference the data paper if applicable:

... Forest (INBO) and described (v5.5) in Stienen et al. 2016 (http://doi.org/10.3897/zookeys.555.6173).

  • More loose description of context, including geographic, temporal and taxonomic scope.

  • Indicate standardization to Darwin Core Archive and describe most relevant fields: Here it is published as a standardized Darwin Core Archive and includes ...

  • Last sentence with GitHub link: Issues with the dataset can be reported at z

Occurrence dataset example:

Meetnetten.be - Fyke counts for Amphibia in Flanders, Belgium is a sampling event dataset published by the Research Institute of Nature and Forest (INBO). It is part of the Meetnetten.be suite of monitoring networks for priority species in Flanders, in which data are collected at fixed locations using a standardized protocol (https://meetnetten.be). This dataset contains site counts for 1 priority species (Triturus cristatus), as well as other amphibians observed during sampling. Here it is published as a standardized Darwin Core Archive and includes for each sampling event an eventID, date, location and sampling protocol (in the event core) and for each occurrence an occurrenceID, the number of recorded individuals, sex, status (present/absent) and scientific name (in the occurrence extension). Issues with the dataset can be reported at https://github.com/inbo/meetnetten-occurrences/issues

Checklist dataset example:

The Checklist of non-native freshwater fishes in Flanders, Belgium is a species checklist dataset published by the Research Institute for Nature and Forest (INBO). It contains information on 23 alien fish species occurring in Flemish natural and semi-natural waterbodies, detected in sampling between 1992 and 2006. This species checklist was assessed within the framework of the Freshwater Fish Monitoring Network by Verreycken et al. (2007) and reassessed for Verreycken et al. (2018). Here it is published as a standardized Darwin Core Archive and includes for each species: the scientific name, kingdom, and stable taxon identifier (in the taxon core), the Dutch and English vernacular name (in the vernacular names extension), the year of first introduction and last assessment in Flanders (given as a year range in the event date in the distribution extension), coarse habitat information (in the species profile extension) and the pathway(s) of introduction, native range(s), and invasion stage in Flanders (in the description extension). The dataset can be used for researching and managing aquatic invasions or compiling regional and national registries of alien species. Issues with the dataset can be reported at https://github.com/trias-project/alien-fishes-checklist

Paragraph 2

Paragraph 2 generally only applies to occurrence datasets, and describes how data are generalized and/or withheld, so users are informed of any significant information loss. Example:

Generalized and/or withheld information: as these are sensitive priority species, location information is generalized to 1, 5 or 10 km Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) grid cells. Original locations are available upon request.

Paragraph 3

This paragraph contains a standard phrasing regarding INBO usage norms and how to contact the people involved. It can be copy/pasted verbatim for INBO datasets, but can deviate a bit for other publishing organizations.

We have released this dataset to the public domain under a Creative Commons Zero waiver. We would appreciate it if you follow the INBO norms for data use (https://www.inbo.be/en/norms-data-use) when using the data. If you have any questions regarding this dataset, don't hesitate to contact us via the contact information provided in the metadata or via [email protected].

Paragraph 4

Paragraph 4 acknowledges the project and/or funding. Examples:

Meetnetten occurrence dataset:

For all published Meetnetten.be datasets, see https://www.gbif.org/dataset/search?project_id=meetnetten.be

LifeWatch occurrence dataset:

The publication of this dataset is supported by INBO and funded by Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO) as part of the Belgian contribution to LifeWatch.

TrIAS checklist:

This dataset was published as open data for the TrIAS project (Tracking Invasive Alien Species http://trias-project.be, Vanderhoeven et al. 2017), with technical support provided by the Research Institute for Nature and Forest (INBO). It is selected as one of the authoritative sources for the compilation of a unified and reproducible checklist of alien species in Belgium.
