What does this PR do?

Fixes the syntax error Syntax error: redirection unexpected that occurred on the IFS= line. read -ra version_parts <<< "$java_version"

Where should the reviewer start?

must start with the check_java_version() function

Why is it needed?

The Syntax error: redirection unexpected error occurs because the <<< operator is not supported in all shells, especially /bin/sh shells. If you are scripting with #!/bin/sh, which is usually a symbolic link to the system's default shell, the <<< operator may not be supported.
