There was a bug report submitted for the FreeBSD package, which indicated that the PHP session extension is required. If so, could this be added to installation requirements?

Here is the bug report and packages patch that I submitted based on a report that I received by email. I did confirm what is quoted below in the email.
"Just ran into a vaguely familiar issue with my FreeBSD test server. The ganglia
page was coming up blank. I eventually traced it back to an issue I had fixed in my ganglia-web port,
which fortunately I still have in wip. Ganglia doesn't work unless php56-session is installed."
