title: Continuously testing helm charts
---

# Introduction

TODO: Small intro about canary-checker and how it fits into the ecosystem

# Prerequisites

- Canary Checker should be installed (Link)
- FluxCD or ArgoCD should be installed (Link)

## Deploying PostgreSQL chart using Resource Check

The role binded to canary-checker should be allowed to manage HelmRepository and HelmRelease, so you might have to add this in the role:

## Continuous testing
Continuous testing ensures that changes to infrastructure and applications are continuously validated throughout the lifecycle.
In Kubernetes, this involves automating tests for containerized applications & infrastructure configurations (such as manifests and Helm charts) and the orchestration layer itself.
These tests can be integrated at multiple stages, including infrastructure provisioning, deployment pipelines, and post updates to clusters, ensuring that new changes do not break functionality or compromise security.
This approach enables faster feedback, stability, and resilience in cloud-native environments.
In the above example, we are not only continuously testing the deployment and installation of a chart but testing the functionality of the chart as well.
## Things that can go wrong
When we deploy a chart, there are a lot of moving parts, which can lead to failures at any level.
Few problems:
- Fetching the chart from the source fails
- Chart's default values might have been updated which break existing functionality
- Admission rules or policies in cluster could change resulting in prevention of installation of new charts
- Templating or rendering errors in helm charts
- Conflict with existing resources in the kubernetes cluster during chart installation
- Depenency mismatch in chart's subcharts
