Springer Nature has updated its policies - Nature journals now ask researchers who submit papers that rely on bespoke software to provide the programs for peer review. More details are in [this editorial](https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-018-02741-4), the [guidelines to authors](https://www.nature.com/authors/policies/availability.html#code) have been updated and a [code and software submission checklist](http://www.nature.com/documents/GuidelinesCodePublication.pdf) is available.

### 12 June 2018

On 17 June 2018 Maria Carla Piastra, Sophie Schrader and Simon Homölle will host a workshop the OHBM2018 conference. The course is aimed at researchers who want to learn how to do MEG and/or EEG source reconstruction. This intense one-day workshop will explain state-of-the-art MEG and EEG source reconstruction methods. Special emphasis will be given to new features available now in FieldTrip to solve the EEG and MEG forward solution with advanced finite element methods. The workshop will consist of a number of lectures, followed by hands-on sessions in which you will be tutored through the complete analysis of a MEG, EEG and MRI data set using the FieldTrip toolbox. As the focus is on source reconstruction, topics that will NOT be covered in great detail are segmenting, artifact handling, averaging, frequency and time-frequency analysis, statistics. For the hands-on sessions you should bring a laptop with MATLAB installed. More information about the program can be found at the OHBM website or [here](/workshop/ohbm2018).

On June 29th, Robert and Jan-Mathijs taught at the Human Connectome Project's workshop, which this year took place in Oxford. During an intense one-week program, 105 participants learnt about the ins and outs of the Human Connectome Project (HCP). Did you know that the HCP consortium also collected (and partially analyzed) MEG data from about 100 participants? And that this data is freely available for download? And that the analysis pipelines and software are also available to the community? Check it out on <https://www.humanconnectome.org>.

Today we had our end-of-year poster session at the Donders Institute, during which also the Donders Cube has been awarded. This is an institutional award that acknowledges 'beyond-call-of-duty' contributions to the scientific and social life of the Donders Institute, and beyond. We are pleased that this year's award has been awarded to the FieldTrip team! We are proud to be able to work on such a nice project, which wouldn't be in its present shape if it weren't from the interactions with and contributions from the whole FieldTrip community! So, let's keep up the good work for the new year to come, and for now all the best for the holiday season.

Matthias Treder has kindly contributed a tutorial and some code (streamlined a bit by yours truly) that now allows you to perform MVPA analysis in FieldTrip, using his awesome [MVPA-light toolbox](https://github.com/treder/MVPA-Light) ! For now it is well supported, documented and tested for channel level time domain data, but in the near future (and with your help) we will also ensure support for frequency domain and source level data. For now you can just use **[ft_timelockstatistics](/reference/ft_timelockstatistics)** with cfg.method='mvpa'. The tutorial can be found [here](/tutorial/mvpa_light).

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic we had to transform it in an online format in which almost everyone (participants and tutors) were attending from home. The format consisted of lectures, extended Q&A sessions, and hands-on sessions where participants worked on tutorials on their own computer. Besides doing it online, this posed additional challenges, with kids at home requiring attention, with time-zone differences, and with some participants now also having clinical duties. This required a lot of creativity of everyone involved, resulting in interesting opportunities. In short: it was a great success, with very good interaction between the about 35 participants and the tutors.

During the recent [toolkit](/workshop/toolkit2020), which took place online, the participants worked on their own computers, causing a larger than usual variability on MATLAB versions and Operating Systems. One issue we encountered was a compatibility problem with SPM-related mex-files. Specfically, when using the default version, which up until now has been spm8, certain functions did not work. We are typically reluctant to change default behavior of functions, but now we decided to upgrade the default SPM version to spm12, for a more stable user experience overall. We expect this change to be inconsequential for most of you, but would like to note that, when needed, you can always go back to using spm8, by specifying cfg.spmversion='spm8', wherever appropriate. Note that cfg.spmversion is only a supported option for the high-level fieldtrip functions.
