Steps to reproduce

To make it easier to explain, here's an image:

Outcome

What did you expect?

If the icon's image is centered, the icon should appear centered to.

What happened instead?

The default letter-on-coloured-background user images have their letters offset to the upper-left (wider characters like "w" are only offset up) in their circular frames. Regular images (and presumably the coloured background images behind the letters) are centered correctly.

Operating system

Arch Linux

Application version

Element version: 1.11.0, Olm version: 3.2.8

How did you install the app?

FlatHub

Homeserver

matrix.org

Will you send logs?

Yes

I've just realised that the default user images don't actually contain the letter in them, the image is just the background colour and the letter is overlayed on top afterwards, that's why only default users images have the offset; the letters in the icons are offset.

EDIT: The letters are always offset regardless of DPI, so it's not caused by DPI.

I have not been able to reproduce this issue on macOs using Chrome, Firefox, or the desktop application.
Changing the zoom level does not seem to trigger the problem either

Something to add is that I'm using a 1440p monitor with 106 DPI (see #22850 for what happens at other DPI values), perhaps my resolution is the cause?

Just confirmed, changing my resolution to 1080p did not fix the issue, user avatar letter's still appear offset by roughly the same amount, so unfortunately I can't pin it down to that.

Also, changing the font Element uses (nor changing the font size) doesn't fix the issue, however, I noticed the offset changed when I used a different font; some avatar letter's appeared offset left and down instead.
