An early 19th century letter of a Polish historian Joachim Lelewel to his brother showcases possibly the simplest way of encoding and displaying facsimiles: with complete URLs given in pb/@facs attribute. It also demonstrates how TEI encoding of hyphenated words could be processed for display in diplomatic vs normalized view.

<p>A letter from Van Gogh to Paul Gauguin written in 1888. This intentionally reproduces the flexible column layout pioneered by the Vincent Van Gogh Letters online edition, which is a model example for correspondence.</p>
<p>The source encoding makes use of custom Van Gogh project namespace along the TEI structure. Alignment between original text and translation is achieved with a custom mapping function which leverages the conventions applied when assigning page identifiers in Van Gogh project.</p>

<abstract>
<p>
This is a prototype for a multiaspect edition of a collection of 17th century poems, <hi>Moralia</hi>.
Most of these short texts have been to a lesser or greater extent based on famous <hi>Adagia</hi> by Erasmus of Rotterdam.
</p>
<p>
The TEI encoding preserves original spelling and punctuation along their normalized forms as well as
physical structure of the manuscript lines and pages and their correspondence with the facsimile.
Extensive commentary is given at various granularities: as an introductory article to each of the pieces as a whole, as well as
for smaller sections of interest, exploring various connections between the edited text, Adagia, and works of classical authors referred to by Erasmus or Potocki.
Finally, at the linguistic level, archaic words or phrases are also elucidated and linked to external resources.
</p>
<p>
Display of these various levels of information can be controlled by the reader thanks to collapsible sections and <code>pb-toggle-feature</code> components.
