on bare metal for MacOS users, but (1) that's a pain in the butt with private repos, and (2) it's water I haven't yet charted (prior platform work I did in Rust for MacOS was compiled with Nix, and at other points I've just taken the "Linux, either bare metal or by Docker, is the only supported platforrm" path. I don't think either is going to work in this scenario, so I'll finally invest some calories in learning Homebrew formulae).
