This repository is a collection of my dotfiles. The dotfiles are for various Linux distributions and environments. They are stored here for others to copy and critique if they wish.
Dotfiles are the customization files used to personalize your Linux or other Unix-based systems. These are simply the files whose names start with a dot (.) like .vimrc, .bashrc, .ssh, etc. And any file that begins with a dot is treated as hidden in all Unix-like operating systems. Therefore, having lots of dotfiles even in your home directory does not make it look cluttered.
Dotfiles are primarily used for software configuration. Therefore, they are also known as configuration files. Different tools that you use daily, such as your Shell, can be configured easily using dotfiles. They can also be used to automate a series of package installations.
Overall, the usefulness of dotfiles lies in the fact that anytime you switch systems it can be quickly configured exactly as you were using it before.
The required packages and imports will differ by distribution. Each configuration file for a respective distro will contain a README.md with the necessary installations. The necessary base installs are provided in the installs.txt file.
These dotfiles are not open to contributions as I use them on my personal system. However, the files and scripts in this repository are licensed under the MIT License, which is a very permissive license allowing you to use, modify, copy, distribute, sell, give away, etc. the software. In other words, do what you want with it. The only requirement with the MIT License is that the license and copyright notice must be provided with the software.
