create-index
program creates (and maintains) ES6 ./index.js
file in target directories that imports and exports sibling files and directories.
I extended the create-index NPM module to add an additional option to the command line.
--isComponentModule -c
To start, lets first lay out what create-index accomplishes for us and then explain why I created the extra option.
create-index parses through node modules and generates export default in your index.js file simplifying the process of developing a module into by designing classes and allowing the automated system to simplify your imports.
create-index grabs every single .js file in the directory and adds it to your index.js file, however in many cases this is not required and often some files are not designed to be public facing files. This is where the component module concept comes in.
Most components whether it be React, Vue etc. is going to be built in a single file and then imported from a view or screen. However some times a single file is not the best practice for building your component. Assuming you would be reusing all of the parts of a larger component you would just break it up into a few different global components, but if you have no intentions of using the components elsewhere, why import it into the module?
When you enable -c or component modules, you enable a secondary option for folders. The automated process will search for a filename that shares the same name as the folder and if it exists, instead of importing the entire folder it imports a single file. This enables you to control how the module is going to be seen when imported and allows you to determine the publicly facing components.

--recursive, -r Create/update index files recursively. Halts on any unsafe

--update, -u Updates only previously created index files (recursively).
[boolean] [default: false]
--banner Add a custom banner at the top of the index file [string]

Since Gulp can ran arbitrary JavaScript code, there is no need for a separate plugin. See Using create-index

Note that the writeIndex
function is synchronous.
create-index
program will look into the target directory.
If there is no ./index.js
, it will create a new file, e.g.
// @create-index
Created index file must start with // @create-index\n\n
. This is used to make sure that create-index
does not accidentally overwrite your local files.
If there are sibling files, index file will import
them and export
, e.g.

When file has the same name as a sibling directory, file import
takes precedence.
Directories that do not have ./index.js
in themselves will be excluded.
When run again, create-index
will update existing ./index.js
if it starts with // @create-index\n\n
.
If create-index
is executed against a directory that contains ./index.js
, which does not start with // @create-index\n\n
, an error will be thrown.
create-index
can ignore files in a directory if ./index.js
contains special object with defined ignore
property which takes an array
of regular expressions
defined as strings
, e.g.
