Welcome to the servers wiki!
This is the documentation wiki for everything member-facing on cloyne.org. For intranet and internet uplink, see the network wiki.
We host our own mailing lists using Sympa software on server2. We also send e-mails ourselves from server2.
Currently, every semester we move existing subscribers of mailing lists to a new mailing list for that semester, and repopulate mailing lists with current members. Some mailing lists automatically source their subscribers from other mailing lists (from-central
sources announce
, so one only has to change announce
; alumni
sources from all previous semesters' mailing lists). So in general it is required only to maintain subscribers of clones
and announce
mailing lists. For clones
members can remove themselves, while for announce
they cannot (it is used for important announcements by managers). Instructions how to do all the necessary changes at the beginning of every semester are in a separate document.
Members can request additional mailing lists here. In general, we welcome such custom mailing lists and approve them.
https://cloyne.org/ uses Wordpress for Cloyne's web site and blog. The idea of the website is to provide:
- a place for common resource for existing members
- a place for an online calendar for events in Cloyne
- a place for information for incoming members (where is Cloyne, what is Cloyne, who to contact for move-ins)
- a place for alumni to see what is happening in Cloyne these days
- a place for members to post blog posts for others to see: related to Cloyne or not
- through blog posts and calendar have a historical record of what is happening in Cloyne, to remember and dream
At every semester (instructions here) new members get accounts created on the site so that they can add content (blog posts and events). Managers should already have accounts and should probably just reset the password if they were not given the password from previous semester's managers.
Wordpress provides multiple roles for users and we map them in the following way:
- administrator – admins of the whole web site
- editor – all managers who can edit all content (posts by others, static pages)
- author – all members (current and past) who can add new content (blog posts and events) but cannot edit those of others
- subscriber – anyone who registers on the web site
To update the installation, one has to update the base Docker image. Based on that image we then have the final Docker image which adds additional plugins and our own theme.
Our theme is based on Twenty Thirteen theme from Wordpress, so when that theme is updated, our theme should be updated as well. To make updating easier we can use git to merge new upstream changes to the theme with our changes to theme. A process is as follows:
- in our repository find the latest commit in the history with unchanged upstream theme being committed and checkout to that commit
- update the theme at that commit with new upstream content and commit it as new version, remember its hash reference
- checkout back to
master
branch and merge the above made commit into themaster
branch; git will try to merge changes, if not successful, you will have to manually resolve merge conflicts
