How I built tabSidian from scratch with GPT 4
Can you really code an entire project with ChatGPT? The short answer is yes, but the real answer is it depends. In this particular case, I am tackling a rather small project: a browser extension. You will get an idea of how prompt engineering helps move a project along, when and where you should step back and reassess, the importance of breaking tasks down into manageable pieces (atomic tasks) and how much you can ask of GPT.
Funny aside: I asked GPT-4 to write an introduction to this article and it came back with this absolute gem:

Though I have coding experience, I have never programmed a browser extension (nor do I have any significant experience with javascript). My initial idea for this project, was to create an extension that would grab all my open tabs, send to OpenAI and have them categorized and summarized. - I don't have access to the gpt-4 API
- OpenAI can't really grab a URL and spit out a summary of it. You actually need to grab the text from the page and send it as tokens.
- Categorizing URLs requires more information than just the URL or title.
I'm sure many of these are solvable, but you also need the browser extension to provide results quickly. Having to wait for the APIs to return information (for potentially tens of URLs) creates a UX problem. I did get GPT-4 to build an initial extension that would store and use a user's OpenAI API key and successfully request answers. It just wasn't getting anything useful back.
From here on, this is the actual conversation with GPT-4 to create this extension. The first part is the original scope I had in mind. You can jump to Part 2 for the actual steps for this version of the extension.
