We all need help now and then, and it often feels like there's nobody to ask! Never fear, IRC is here! IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat and is one of the oldest chat protocols around (which also means it is very widespread and fairly stable).

Here are the credentials for our irc chat room:

  • server: irc.freenode.net
  • channel: #byuanimgt

You can chat on IRC with Pidgin which is installed on the lab machines. Follow the instructions here.
If that doesn't fit with your style, you can use a webchat client: https://webchat.freenode.net/
And if you're running on a Mac, you can use Adium, or Colloquy

Please feel free to jump on. Ask for help. Tell jokes. Ask for code reviews. Be a friend.

Autoloading the chat room when Pidgin first starts

Pidgin has a nice feature to autoload a particular chatroom whenever it (Pidgin) starts.

  • Once you have logged into the chat room, click on the Conversation menu and choose the Add... option.
  • In the subsequent pop up window, toggle on Autojoin when account connects.
  • It is also possible to make Pidgin start automatically at login, but that is beyond the scope of this wiki page as the process for this is different for every operating system.

It is a good idea to auto-load the chat room whenever possible. You never know when someone else may be on-line to either ask or answer questions, so the more often that we have more people on-line, the better it is for all of us.
