Apple TV 4, Roku, Google Chromecast and any other device with hard coded DNS
Some devices completely ignore user assigned DNS if they can access some other pre-defined public DNS address (e.g. 8.8.8.8
or 8.8.4.4
).
To get these devices to respect your overrides, simply add a static route for each of these IPs on your router to the loopback IP address 127.0.0.1
, effectively null-routing them.
Alternatively, if you have a more sophisticated router with firewall capability, you may be able to selectively block access to these IPs from specific devices only.
For Netflix, you'll also have to block direct access to their media servers, which are currently listed below, but may change over time (get your tcpdump
out):
108.175.32.0/20
198.38.96.0/19
198.45.48.0/20
185.2.220.0/22
23.246.0.0/18
37.77.184.0/21
45.57.0.0/17
