WordPress Showcase

Reyes Martínez edited this page May 6, 2024 · 4 revisions

The Showcase shows the world what can be done with WordPress. It demonstrates the capabilities of the publishing platform with a vast array of use cases, including sites for personal bloggers, small businesses, enterprise companies, and national governments.

  • Primary success metric: Showcase views
  • Other metrics: New Showcase submissions, New WordPress installs, WordPress brand sentiment

Contributing

This is an excellent opportunity to get involved in a way that helps shape how others, especially those who aren't familiar with WordPress, might come to view the work of brands utilizing WordPress. As the Make Marketing Team updates the content of the Showcase, the team should aim to elevate and maintain the integrity of the platform.

Whether you would like to practice showcase moderation, share your copywriting skills, or capture images from some of the most beautiful sites on the web, there is something to contribute. Here is how Showcase submissions come to the Showcase:

  1. New Showcase submissions are periodically synced to a Google sheet by a Showcase admin.
  2. Approved contributors review submissions, based on the submission guidelines, and create Github issues for those that meet the submission criteria.
  3. Contributors write the Showcase entry description and share it in the GitHub issues.
  4. Contributors add the necessary screenshots to the GitHub issues.
  5. Showcase admins publish the content to the Showcase.

Moderating submissions

New Showcase submissions are periodically synced to this Google sheet by a Showcase admin (currently @eidolonnight @ndiego @laurlittle). If you would like to help moderate submissions, please request access from one of these admins.

With access, you will be reviewing sites based on the guidelines included in the submission form. Blogs and websites powered by WordPress that make it into the Showcase are typically doing one or more of the following:

  • Using WordPress in a unique or innovative way.
  • Representing a notable organization, government entity, or corporation as an official blog or website.
  • Using modern WordPress.

Please keep in mind that sites must be using WordPress (tools like BuiltWith can help check) and following basic web standards. Common reasons to reject sites include: site SSL is invalid, site contains low-resolution images, site contains excessive ads, and broken styling or links. It is normal for nearly half of all submissions to be rejected for these reasons.

After clicking and reviewing a submission, set the status and add notes. If accepted, create a new GitHub issue using the [Team-use Only] Showcase Moderation entry form. This issue URL should then be added to the sheet.

Writing entries

Showcase submissions needing copy are labeled as "needs copy" in GitHub. Before you begin, familiarize yourself with the WordPress Brand Writing Guide. Simple Showcase entries are organized in the following way:

  • 1st Paragraph: A few sentences about the company, organization, or person that the site is for/about. If there's an interesting quote to pull directly from the website, feel free to use it.
  • 2nd Paragraph: Briefly describe the website, how WordPress has helped it come to life, and what's unique or interesting about it.

Example Showcase entries:

Consider using AI to help get started. Example prompt:

Good morning. I would like you to act as a copywriter for the WordPress brand. Your tone is casual, respectful, and positive neutral. Your voice can be characterized as friendly, clear, composed, inclusive, charming, and empowering. Your language style should be clear and straightforward, with a dash of playfulness without being too grandiose, and needs to be understood by people whose first spoken language may not be English.

The WordPress software  is flexible, customizable, extensible, reliable, innovative, and scalable for websites of any size.

Please write me a website description for INSERT WEBSITE URL that aims to show the world what can be done with WordPress and help demonstrate the capabilities of WordPress as a publishing platform with a vast array of use cases of sites for personal bloggers and small businesses to enterprise companies and national governments.

The content should include two short paragraphs without headings: first paragraph should be around three sentences and describe the company, organization, brand, or person the website is about; second paragraph should be three sentences or less about how WordPress is being used in an interesting and unique way.

Showcase admins will review all content before publishing it. They may give feedback or ask for edits to ensure consistency in formatting, tone, style across all Showcase entries, etc.
