High-level Roadmap for the Aether OnRamp project.

Stage 1: Get Started

An initial version exists. Remaining tasks include:

  • Specify requirements for BYO-Kubernetes scenarios.
  • Extend gNBsim to support iperf (and/or other user plane workload).

Stage 2: GitOps

An initial version exists. Remaining tasks include:

Stage 3: Physical Base Stations

An initial version exists. Remaining tasks include:

  • Monitoring dashboard is incomplete
  • Better describe the "SIM burning" process
  • Add a second (and third) base station
  • Continuously monitor from Raspberry Pi + Dongle

Stage 4: Runtime Control

An initial version exists. Remaining tasks include:

Stage 5: Scale Cluster

Grow the cluster from a single server to multiple servers. Work on this stage is underway, and includes decoupling gNBSIM from SD-Core, with both able to scale separately. The approach will also unify how the Kubernetes cluster connects to external RAN elements (whether they are physical or simulated).

Stage 6: Scale SD-Core

Spin up multiple Slices and UPF instances.

Stage 7: Optimize the Network

Support other network configurations, such as SR-IOV.

Stage 8: Incorporate SD-RAN

Integrate SDRAN-in-a-Box into OnRamp:

  • Prune options (focus on OAI Hardware & RAN Sim)
  • Run on RKE2.0 (rather than Kubespray)
  • Integrate with SD-Core (rather than OMEC)

Stage N: Other

The above list is not meant to be exhaustive.
