Greenhouse Gas protocols set the standard to measure and manage emissions.
The [Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol](https://ghgprotocol.org/) is a globally recognised accounting tool for governments and businesses to understand, quantify, and manage their greenhouse gas emissions. The protocol defines three scopes of emissions:

### Scope 1
Includes all direct emissions that are generated from sources that are directly owned or controlled by an organisation. For a software company there is a very small list of sources but it is not empty. It can include any emissions from fossil fuelled hire cars used to visit customers and emissions from refrigerant leaks found in A/C & fuel burnt in heating systems within offices.
Scope 1 emissions encompass the direct greenhouse gas (GHG) releases from resources a company owns and controls. These emissions enter the atmosphere as an immediate consequence of the company's operations. It's important to note that all fuel consumption resulting in GHG emissions must be accounted for within Scope 1. Scope 1 is categorised into four main areas:

The largest and hardest to quantify because it relies on suppliers to provide detailed breakdowns of a product’s carbon footprint. This scope includes areas like emissions from cloud infrastructure and the embodied carbon of computer hardware.
Scope 3 includes all indirect emissions that occur in an organisation’s value chain, both upstream and downstream. The GHG Protocol seperates Scope 3 into 15 categories, including business travel, waste disposal and purchased goods and services.

Scope 3 emissions often represent the largest portion of a company's total GHG emissions, sometimes accounting for more than 70% of the carbon footprint. Therefore, while it may be optional in some contexts, reporting Scope 3 emissions is increasingly seen as crucial for understanding and managing a company's full climate impact.

Unlike scope 1 and 2, scope 3 can be double counted. For example, the manufacture of a product would be accounted for within the manufacturer's scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. A company purchasing that product would report and count the emissions of that product's manufacture and transport in their own Scope 3 emissions, accounting for those emissions a second time. This double counting can only occur within a company's scope 3 emissions.

# GHG Alignment

The Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol is a widely used international accounting tool for governments and businesses to understand, quantify, and manage their greenhouse gas emissions. [Read more about the GHG Protocol](resources/glossary#greenhouse-gas-ghg-protocols).

The Tech Carbon Standard (TCS) specifically focuses on the technology landscape, a subset of a company's overall GHG emissions. This focus is to help organisations identify technology related sources of GHG emissions. Furthermore, the TCS provides guidance for selecting the calculation approaches, reliable sources of data and emissions factors to be able to calculate those emissions, which can then be used to roll-up to corporate level GHG reporting.

The TCS is most helpful and applicable for identifying emissions sources and calculating GHG Scope 3 emissions. These categories should be reserved for breakdown and analysis of it's contributing factors to Scope 1 and 2, rather than reporting them. GHG Protocol is focuses on an attributional model, meaning that the identification of sources and the emissions calculations are used for accoutning and reporting, "attributing" emissions to the company, fitting squarely into Scope 1, 2 or 3. I think this needs expanding a little, underlining the fact that we include Cat O so that we have included it for consequential accounting as mentioned above, and that it should not be used for attributional accounting. Perhaps an example of how you would use the data in an office or on prem data centre, using the electricity bill for the building for attributional and the consequential reporting to lower that bill.

I know it is already all in there -I just feel like it needs to be tied together here.

I think you can delete the last clause of the first sentence ("identifying... emissions".) Further, "GHGs" should probably be replaced with "emissions" or similar to avoid confusion.

There are top-down approaches for measuring GHG emissions from end-user devices and network data transfer, which are appropriate for Scope 3 reporting. For guidance and requirements for calculating the product life cycle, there is the [Product Life Cycle Accounting and Reporting Standard](https://ghgprotocol.org/product-standard) from GHG Protocol.
