This is it: KEP's final form. 8 months after the first release and just about 2 years in development, this should the Kanto Expansion Pak's last update. As always, make sure to save the game in an indoor map (I would recommend your house or a Pokemon Center) to ensure your save loads smoothly. 1.1 to 1.2 seems to work, though I have yet to test 1.0 saves.

To use, simply apply the given patch to a clean copy of Pokemon Red. The SHA1 should be ea9bcae617fdf159b045185467ae58b2e4a48b9a, which matches a retail copy or one built from pret/pokered. Alternatively, you can straight-up build KEP from source.

The given patch works with apps like LunarIPS and (I think) xdelta.

The new additions since 1.2 are as follows:

  • Two new music tracks: a demake of the Galarian Bird theme (by the very talented LuciShrimp), and a slightly pitched-down Gym Leader theme used for Elite Four matches.
  • After earning all 8 badges, the trainers in Celadon University get a decent level increase, allowing for a much better grinding spot between Victory Road and the Pokemon League.
  • Added the Pocket Lapras, a version of the infamous unused Surfboard item. Obtained from an NPC on Cinnabar Island, it's meant to prevent softlocking. Sorry Pikasprey.
  • A handful of changes/improvements to move animations. (credit to wrulfy and Carmine Red)
  • Gives the player the option to use another Repel after the last one runs out. (credit to Vortiene and PureRGB)
  • A bunch of additions from Yellow Legacy, namely Bag and PC item quick sorting, an EXP bar in battle, and a MUCH bigger bag!
  • The title screen may now randomly display Green or Sandy Shocks instead of the regular Red and Scream Tail.
  • When playing as Green, the Pokedex diploma will display her instead of Red.
  • Gave a few Pokemon some tradeback moves they were supposed to have but didn't.
  • Changes the tileset of Rocket Hideout, Silph Co. and Cinnabar Mansion to be much easier on the eyes, especially when holding the run button.
  • Blue's room in the Indigo Plateau looks cooler now.
  • Improved Wiglett's and Meltan's back sprites.
  • Various text fixes.
  • Small buffs to certain late/post game boss trainers.
  • Minor encounter table changes.
  • Improvements to fishing encounter tables.
  • Increased the level of the Salesman's Cubone gift from 17 to 23.
  • Decreased the levels of the Fossil gifts from 44 to 35.
  • Fixed an issue where Steel didn't resist Rock. Trust me, it was supposed to.
  • Cinnabar Volcano is, once again, softlock-proof. I'd give it about 2 days before someone somehow finds another way to get stuck here.
  • Fixed a bug where the Hitmon gift could not be collected without speaking to Koichi twice.
  • Fixed a graphical glitch that happened when trying to name gift Pokemon.
  • Fixed a bug where, occasionally, static encounters would stay on the overworld after being defeated/caught.
  • Fixed some small issues pertaining to the Vermilion City Beauty sidequest.
  • Fixed issues where receiving a Gym badge wouldn't play the correct sound in most situations.
  • Decreased Draining Kiss's PP by 5 to remain consistent with the main series.
  • Fixed a glitchy event regarding Oak's PC in his lab.

To everyone, thanks for playing! - MM

Kanto Expansion Pak v1.2

Another batch of annoying bug fixes have been ironed out, and the game should be a lot more playable now. Unless some more huge bugs are discovered, I expect the number of releases to really slow down now.

The fixed bugs are as follows:

  • When reloading a save inside certain indoor areas, the border tile would not load correctly, allowing you to walk out of bounds and crash the game.

  • Some static encounter field sprites wouldn't disappear after battle. While this wouldn't be an issue for most, the Cactormus on Brunswick Trail would impede progress if this glitch occurred, so a special case was added to ensure this won't happen again.

  • Getting the Vermilion Beauty gift would lock you out from getting the Silph Co Lapras gift later.

  • Okay, NOW it's impossible to trap yourself in Cinnabar Volcano.

  • Viewing the Town Map in Viridian Pre-Gym would show the player as being in Cerulean.

  • Psychic, Psywave, Night Shade and Dazzling Gleam wouldn't shake the full screen when used.

  • A lot of small text fixes

Kanto Expansion Pak v1.1

After receiving helpful reports from early players, myself, alongside Thorn Avery and jojobear, fixed several bugs present in the 1.0 release. Those who have save files from 1.0 will still work, though it's highly advised to save in an indoor area like your house in Pallet Town before updating. It’s worth noting that some bugs still exist in this version, which have been fixed in 1.2.

The fixed bugs are as follows:

  • Using multiple TMs or HMs in quick succession would cause a game crash
  • It was possible to get yourself stuck in the bottom floor of Cinnabar Volcano by pushing a boulder in the path of the stairs
  • When viewing a Pokemon's DVs, the HP stat would display the Attack DV instead
  • A guy in Celadon University was stuck in a tree due to being placed on the wrong tile
  • It was possible to walk out of bounds in Mt. Moon Crater due to buggy collision near the bottom of the map
  • Hi Jump Kick had a slightly glitched animation
  • It was possible to walk into a specific rock in both Cerulean Cave and Garnet Cavern
  • There was no signpost outside Bill's Lighthouse where there should've been
  • The Fissure TM was not purchasable at the Citrine Rocket house
  • Even if you had picked one of the original starters, you could still get the Charmander and Squirtle gifts as the NPCs would show up regardless.
  • Trying to get the Squirtle gift with a full party and box would lock you out from getting it
  • Fixed a text issue in Celadon University where the professor states the wrong TM
  • Fixed two text issues in Silph Co

This is the first release of the Kanto Expansion Pak ROM Hack. It’s worth noting that some bugs exist in this version, most of which have been fixed in later releases. I’d recommend downloading 1.2 from the releases page instead.

Known bugs:

  • Sequential usage of TMs can cause game crashes (fairly common in RBY hacks)
  • Overworld Surf in the Cycling Road prompts an invisible text box.
