Here is the HC-1 module with it's companions HC-2 and [HC-3](HC-3.md).
Here is the HC-1 module:

While they're shown side-by-side as typical for Rack modules with expanders,
the HC One modules automatically find each other without having to sit next to each other.

When first loaded, there is a long initialization time (a minute or two) to find the EM device, initialize the MIDI ports, and read all user and system presets from the device.
By default, the list of presets are saved, so the next time you open the patch, it skips loading the lists from the device and you should be up and running quickly.

You can watch the prograss of the multi-step initialization process with the row of dots on the bottom.
When everything is connected and working as expected, all the dots are blue, and you can begin playing.

## Troubleshooting

If you are running on Windows, remember that no other software can open the same MIDI device, unless you have third-party virtual MIDI software or drivers installed.
SO make sure that you are not running the Haken Editor, a DAW, or other software that already has the device open.

If HC-1 is unable to successfully connect and initialize fully, check that the Haken Editor can connect to the device.
If the Haken Editor cannot connect, then neither can HC-1.

# Module HC-2

HC-2 is a companion to HC-1, offering control of Rounding (including tuning/scale quantization), Pedal assignments, and a live map of MIDI channel 1 and MIDI channel 16 control codes.

Let me know if the HC-2 pedal controls are useful. They are redundant given the complete support for pedals present in the Pedal 1 and Pedal 2 modules.

For more detailed pedal control, see [Pedal 1 and Pedal 2](Pedals.md).

HC One is *not* intended to be a replacement for the Haken Editor.
The intention is to build out a performance companion for the device.

HC-1 is the main module.
The rest are companion modules to HC-1, and require an HC-1 in the patch to do anything.
HC One modules automatically find each other, so you are free to arrange them wherever in the rack you like.
They do not have to be side-by-side like Rack expander modules.

The HC-One modules shown here from left to right are:

- **[Pedal 1 & Pedal 2](Pedals.md)** Pedal control, virtual pedals, and pedal CV in/out.

- **[HC-3](HC-3.md)** Pushbuttons to access up to 16 Favorite files.
