Create your first symbol set using the Inkscape UI

- Open Inkscape.
- Go to "Object" > "Symbol..." (or use Shift + Ctrl + Y) to open the Symbols dialog panel.
- Drag objects from the Symbol panel to the Inkscape canvas.
- Voilá!
- Make sure your SVG object is ready in your canvas.
- Right click in your SVG object > "Object Properties...".
- Change the "ID" field of your SVG object.
- Click on "Set" to apply the new name to your future Symbol.
- Now with the object(s) ready on the canvas and with the desired name applied you should only left click the object and go to the left arrow (in the bottom left of the Symbols panel).
- As soon as you click the left arrow the object will be added to your new collection of Symbols.
- Open Inkscape.
- Go to "File" > "Document Properties..." > Click on the "Metadata" tab.
- Fill in the "Title", "Date", "Creator" and all the relevant fields.
- Next go to the "License" tab and choose your desired license.
- Go to "File" > "Save as..." > Press Ctrl + H on the keyboard.
~/.config/inkscape/symbols
- choose the desired name of your SVG file and save it as an "Inkscape SVG (*.svg)" file.
- Go to "File" > "Save as...".
- (Inkscape 32 bits)
C:\Program Files (x86)\Inkscape\share\symbols
- (Inkscape 64 bits)
C:\Program Files\Inkscape\share\symbols
- choose the desired name of your SVG file and save it as an "Inkscape SVG (*.svg)" file.
- Go to "File" > "Save as...".
- Go to the path:
/Applications/Inkscape.app/Contents/Resources/share/inkscape
- Choose the desired name of your SVG file and save it as an "Inkscape SVG (*.svg)" file.
- Close Inkscape.
- Reopen Ikscape.
- Go to the Symbols dialog panel (or use Shift + Ctrl + Y) or go to "Object" > "Symbols" and search for the name of your file on the dropdown menu of Symbol Sets.
- Voilá!
