While the base markdown-it syntax that's based mostly on CommonMark doesn't support much in terms of pure Markdown tables, plugins allow it to overcome this limitation (and as #106 shows Julian seems to be willing to integrate them if they add desirable functionality).
markdown-it-multimd-table plugin adds support form MultiMarkdown table syntax, including optionally the desired here multiline tables.
Additionally it expands the table syntax all across the board, allowing one to create more advanced tables with cells that span multiple rows (optional) and columns, grouped headers, table captions and headerless tables (also optional) without the use of HTML.
