- In this analysis, simply swapping V and K and nothing else outperforms everything except ISRT!
- In effect though, it creates an awkward non-SFB CK bigram which the analyzer doesn't pick up on.
- VE/EV are also 3× more common than KE/EK and not too comfortable without alt-fingering.

The ColemaQ mod consists of 3–4 simple key swaps from Colemak-DH and these aren't directly connected so it's easy to discuss and analyze them separately to gain some idea of their individual effects.

I had a big A-ha! moment when I tried the V-K swap in ColemaQ (the only part of it that the analyzer actually liked, thus it made sense to test it out) and it created at least as many problems as it solved, given that I view the KN SFB as a zero-problem because I find it extremely easy to alt-finger. I also alt-finger LK easily enough, so I didn't find the V-K swap useful in sum since it creates other issues in turn that the analyzer didn't pick up on. I noticed the VE and CK bigrams, which aren't same-finger bigrams nor weak-finger near-bigrams but involve stretches that felt unpleasant to me from middle to index fingers. Their Colemak-DH counterparts, VK and CE, are less frequent.

The Q; swap seems entirely subjective to me at this point. I know its fans find it good somehow. Neither the analyzer nor I see any point in it, beyond a very minute reduction in SFB%. It's said that the QU roll is nice, but the QU bigram isn't at all bad without the swap and it isn't common either.

Colemak-Kurl: The V-K swap for Cmk-DH
-------------------------------------
- The V-K swap is a "bleeding-edge" Cmk mod idea to fix the KN/NK and KL/LK same-finger bigrams.
- Note that its benefits are very poorly documented. Alt-fingering the SFBs works very well too.
- Note that its benefits are very poorly documented. Alt-fingering these SFBs works very well too.
- Also, it creates an awkward CK bigram which analyzers may not pick up on as it isn't a SFB.
- The VE bigram also gets worse, and it's 3× as common as VK. These may be alt-fingered, but...
- ...what's the point in the end, in avoiding some awkward bigrams to create others?
- Note that some of the newest analysis tries to include such "LSB" Lateral-Stretch Bigrams.

This is where EPKL holds layouts that aren't fully tested as part of the BigBag, and/or don't quite belong in there ... yet?

If I wish to tuck something away because in my opinion it'd cause more confusion than necessary in one of the other folders, it may spend time in this folder.
Some layouts require more testing, or their compatibility with my other mods and variants may be on the problematic side. There's already a lot of Colemak variants in the Colemak folder, for instance.

Some strange layouts are still out in the main folder for fun, such as the joke layouts QUARTZ (Perfect Pangram layout) and Foalmak (April's Foals layout). I should hope it's easy enough for users to get those jokes.

Maybe you at least learned not to trust layout hype, a valuable lesson in itself...

- In any folder without a special abbreviation, just use the first three letters of its name.
- You could also point to it in an active `layout = ` line in your `EPKL_Layouts_Override.ini` file under the `[pkl]` section.
- If you haven't got one, copy-paste one from the `EPKL_Layouts_Override_Example` file.
- Example: `layout = _Test\Cmk-eD-QIx\Cmk-eD-QIx_ANS_CurlAngleSym:Cmk-TestLayout` for the Colemak-QI;x ANSI mod.

Another question to ask yourself is that of convenience. The most optimized layouts aren't available on Windows or MacOS; but then again all those other useful layout tools aren't either so maybe that doesn't matter to you. If you have a programmable keyboard or something like the **EPKL** program, some skills and time to spend, you can have nearly any layout with the additions you want. But if you aren't there, you may find that your best option is in fact vanilla Colemak (lots of available options for several OSes and platform) or even the aged and long-toothed Dvorak (comes preinstalled on Windows).

For a cautionary tale of metrics vs experience, check out [my own attempt at testing the Colemak V-K swap][CmQpkl] alias the ["Kurl" mod][CmmV-K].

Colemak(-DH/-CAWS/-???) is a solid, balanced and useful choice, regardless. And that's my two bits.
