In Datadog On-Call, escalation policies ensure that Pages are promptly addressed. Pages are escalated through predefined steps, unless acknowledged within set timeframes.

Datadog creates a default escalation policy when you [onboard a Team to On-Call][1].

## Overview

On-call processing rules allow teams to customize their response strategies for distinct types of incoming events. This enables teams to add events and urgency levels to escalation policies based on the event's metadata. Low urgency pages do not trigger escalation processes.

You must [configure your profile settings][1] before you can receive On-Call Pages. Your profile includes settings for contact methods, testing those methods, and notification preferences. These ensure that you receive timely and effective Pages.

Teams are the central organizational unit of [Datadog On-Call][2]. Pages are sent to a Team, and the Team's schedules or escalation policies route the Page to an appropriate Team member.

On-Call Teams are an extension of [Datadog Teams][1]. On-Call Teams are listed on the [Teams][3] overview page, alongside Teams that do not perform on-call duties. Datadog recommends that you use existing Teams for your On-Call configuration whenever possible, as this increases your On-Call Team's discoverability.
