## Final Musings
### Panik? <img src="./assets/panik.png" style="height:2em;display:inline"></img>

Paradoxically, I find SciFi stories are often candid reflections of the authors' (and by extension a larger community) psyche. This makes SciFi a terrible guide to anyoe looking for potential misuses of LLMs. While a lot of media attention focuses on SkyNet and singularity scenarios, the real impact of LLMs will probably be first felt by smaller communities online and in the global south. Fake news have plagued gubernatorial elections in Indonesia since at least 2014, and have arguably profoundly influenced politics in the 4th most populated country in the world. Nowadays anyone with a commercial laptop can spin up an army of fake profiles and use LLMs push specific political views, or conduct astroturfing on a massive scale.

While regulation is necessary, meaningful enforcement remains a challenge. Luckily [LLMs for fact-checking](https://arxiv.org/abs/2210.08726) are already an active field of research.

Paradoxically, I find that science fiction narratives often serve as sincere reflections of cultural anxieties, with the caveat that not every community has access to the medium of a hollywood franchise. Consequently, although much attention is given to science fiction scenarios (à la singularity and rise of the machine), the true impact of LLMs will likely be initially experienced by smaller online communities and those in the global south. In Indonesia, for instance, the issue of fake news has plagued gubernatorial elections since at least 2014, exerting a profound influence on the politics the 4th most populated country on earth. With the recent advancement discussed above, anyone equipped with a commercial laptop can easily deploy a multitude of fabricated profiles and exploit LLMs to propagate specific political ideologies or engage in large-scale astroturfing.
I find SciFi often candidly reflect many aspects of the authors' (and by extension a larger community) psyche. Paradoxically, this makes SciFi a terrible guide to anyoe looking for potential misuses of LLMs. Afterall, the world of publishing remains exlusive and political. While a lot of media attention focuses on SkyNet and singularity scenarios, the real impact of LLMs will probably be first felt by smaller communities online and in the global south. While regulatory measures are imperative, effectively enforcing them remains a considerable challenge. Fortunately, the field of research dedicated to employing [LLMs for fact-checking](https://arxiv.org/abs/2210.08726) purposes is already active and holds promise.
