Community Podcast: Open Educational Resource (OER)

A guide to start, manage and realize positive impacts through your podcasts

This Open Educational Resource (OER) is designed to guide learners through the process of creating, producing, and measuring the impact of a community-focused podcast. It covers the technical aspects and impact assessment to ensure the podcast can successfully engage and benefit the community it aims to serve.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this OER, learners will be able to:

  1. Define what a community podcast is and understand its role in fostering engagement and connection within a specific community.
  2. Plan and structure an effective community podcast, including choosing topics, episode formats, and guest selection.
  3. Utilize the right tools and technologies for recording, editing, and distributing podcast episodes.
  4. Track and measure the impact of their podcast on the community using key performance indicators (KPIs) and feedback tools.
  5. Implement ethical considerations and best practices in podcast production and community involvement.

Resource Example

An example of a successful community podcast might be one that focuses on stories of resilience, growth and impact including entertaining the public with educative and informative content. The podcast could highlight positive stories and community-driven projects, helping to connect people with local resources and opportunities.


Tools & Materials

  • Recording Equipment: Microphone (zoom 8), pop filter, and headphones.
  • Editing Software: Audacity (free), Adobe Enhance Podcast (free),
  • Podcast Hosting: Anchor, Soundcloud
  • Social Media Tools: Canva for graphic design

Step-by-Step Guide / Instructions

1. Planning Your Community Podcast

  • Choose Your Topic: Identify a subject that resonates with your community.
  • Identify Your Audience: Understand who you want to reach and their interests.
  • Decide on the Format: Will you have guests? Is it a solo podcast or interview-based?

2. Recording and Editing

  • Set Up Your Equipment: Ensure your microphone and headphones are correctly configured.
  • Record Your Episode: Use your chosen software to record your content.
