Describe the solution you'd like
It would be nice to add custom gaps / padding between windows, since the previous extensions are not supported anymore.

You can do that using vanilla KWin. Just press Meta+T and the tiling screen will pop up, with the padding option in the top right corner.
ETA: If you set it to 16-17, you get to keep your floating panel with tiled windows. How cool is that?

What do you mean by this? How can I experiment that "floating panel with tiled windows"?

If you set your panel to floating, and set window padding to 16-17 px in KWin's tile editor (the one you get when you press Meta+T by default), the panel will stay floating even with your windows tiled.
