This is not so much an idea for new features, as an idea for making features more accessible without dragging the user's mind away from "writing a novel" to focus on "manipulating the program". Just one click, without having to move eyes and mouse to the Project Content section of the screen.
Basically, buttons. Actually in the section of the screen the user's looking at already.
In the document viewer: "move next" and "move previous." If the currently-displayed document happens to be a novel document, chapter, or scene then also "move next active" and "move previous active". Also show the active/inactive flag and the status, when relevant (but they can't get changed here).
In the editor section: the same plus "new chapter" and "new scene", or "new note" when looking at a note. These should just accept the default name, not ask the user to confirm it - maybe have a setting to turn that behavior on and off. Also active/inactive flag and status dropdown, when relevant (here they can get changed).
Somewhat more involved: the editor section could have "split at cursor" which would create a new one of whatever is currently being shown, and move the section of the editor window's contents below the cursor to it. Consider replicating the markdown from the top of the item too.
