Note that pkgdown uses markdown to generate the index.html page from either an index.md or README.md, so we can't get live examples in the readme. One thought is we could link them into a live version on the site?
Some like this should be achievable in rmarkdown. We could create a sub folder in articles called gallery that contains Rmd for each example and then have an index page that links out each page. The ggobi book is probably a good place to start for looking for ideas for what to include in the gallery.
