Help with Taric Tree algorithm

Hello,
I find it very difficult to understand the algorithm behind the building of the Taric tree, is there any official documentation on how one can build this tree having all the commodities, taking into account the identation and hierarchical position of the commodity? I am a Java-based dev, so it's bit hard for me to read python.

Hi @olgaki – have you seen the documentation here? https://uktrade.github.io/tariff-data-manual/documentation/data-structures/commodity-codes.html. It describes the purpose of the indent for each commodity code and from there you can work out the algorithm – but it doesn't specify the algorithm in detail.

Perhaps @michalc can paste the query we use for building the commodity code table for the open data on data.gov.uk? You may also just be able to consume the commodity code table from the API directly, see https://www.data.gov.uk/dataset/3bee9a8a-e69c-400e-add5-3345a87a8e25/tariffs-to-trade-with-the-uk-from-1-january-2021

Thank you for all the info! We had an issue in our algorithm and it's much clearer now, we have managed to construct the tree properly.

No worries at all! If you take a look at the above link, we make available an SQLite dump whenever the database is updated. Does that suit your needs?
