downloaded and installed all 3 latest deb packages in the order detailed on the
installation wiki. Rebooted, launched admin, clicked on unlock and the admin
window closes immediately.

can you start tpfan-admin from a terminal
#tpfan-admin
and post the output after it crashes?

Actually the problem is obvious when you launch tpfan-admin from terminal.
FPrint is installed and is prompting in terminal for a fingerprint swipe.
FPrint authentication is not being handled when launching tpfan-admin from
System Settings.

OK, I finally could reproduce your bug. The problem is that tpfan-admin doesn't
use PolicyKit whereas FPrint assumes that all apps with GUI should use it.
https://launchpad.net/~fingerprint/+archive/fprint -> Issue 2

As for now I suggest that you use the workaround from FPrint's launchpad page,
i.e. edit the "Thinkpad Fan Control" shortcut and replace
"/usr/bin/tpfan-admin" by "gksu-polkit /usr/bin/tpfan-admin"
