Go ahead and dream.

“The Greenbrier is the perfect family camping river or floating fishing river,” says Chuck Workman, owner of Appalachian Sport in Marlinton. The river is reliably runnable in spring and only occasionally so otherwise; fish any time for smallmouth bass and trout. Fall is a great time to hit the trail. It’s got a crushed gravel surface (rideable even after a rain) and an easy grade — less than 1 percent. But Chuck’s favorite thing about both the river and trail is the serenity you’ll experience. “You’re not going to encounter a lot of people on it. That’s probably the appeal of the trail, just getting feeling like you’re back in nature.”

Take on the 78-mile trail all at once or just tackle a section. For a day trip, try the 25 miles from Cass to Marlinton and return by bike or arrange a shuttle with one of the local outfitters. For an overnight trip, try a trailside B & B or pitch your tent at one of the 15 primitive trailside campsites or at the developed campground in Watoga State Park. Most outfitters will arrange custom shuttles for you and your bike or boat. For a day trip on the river, paddle some of the 18 miles of class I-II water between Clover Lick and Marlinton.

Enjoy ever-changing views and spots like the new Spice Run Wilderness Area and Sharp’s Tunnel (check out the swimming hole there, too). Expect to see wildlife. “Any day that you see a bald eagle and a bear is a good day,” says Greenbrier River Trail Association President Leslee McCarty, “If you can throw in a bobcat that would be perfect.”

Then there’s the dream big option – throwing the bike into the canoe and making it a double-sport round trip. Chuck hasn’t catered to the paddler/cyclist combo, admitting that it can get pretty crowded in that canoe, but clearly he’s thought about it: “You can actually stash stuff on the way down for on the way back.” Now we’re talkin’.

Where it’s at: The northern terminus is about four hours from Pittsburgh. From Morgantown, WV, take I-79 south 35 miles to US 219 south (exit 99); follow 219 about 80 miles to Linwood, WV. Take a left on WV-66 and travel about 11 miles to Deer Creek Road. Take a right to get to the trailhead parking.

Easily access the southern terminus from I-64 about 10 miles west of the VA/WV border; turn north on US 219 (exit 169) and travel 1.5 miles to US 60 east, go another 3 miles to Caldwell, WV. Turn north on Stonehouse Road (CR 38) and go 1.3 miles to the trailhead parking.
