Personal & Transportable DevOps Cluster

Let me introduce you the new dev/ops way … My ‘Personal & Transportable DevOps Cluster'

Updates

Now RPis are supported by default, so it becomes really simple with docker-machine (docker 1.12.2)

- Install your RPis from a clean Rasbian image (or be ready to suffer)
- Edit the /etc/os-release file on your RPIs to change ID to 'Debian'
- From your local machine run:
    * export TOKEN=$(for i in $(seq 1 32); do echo -n $(echo "obase=16; $(($RANDOM % 16))" | bc); done; echo)
    * docker-machine create -d generic --engine-storage-driver=overlay --swarm --swarm-master --swarm-image hypriot/rpi-swarm:latest \
    --swarm-discovery="token://$TOKEN" --generic-ip-address=192.168.1.99 --generic-ssh-user <youruser> black-pearl
    In case of failure, be careful about the following details (left-over from previous manipulations)
      $ sudo apt-get remove --purge docker-engine
      $ sudo apt-get clean
      - If you have the dpkg config file issue, then create a file /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/local with the following content:
      Dpkg::Options {
        "--force-confdef";
        "--force-confold";
      }
      $ sudo mv /etc/systemd/system/docker.service.d /etc/systemd/system/docker.service.d.disabled
      $ sudo systemctl daemon-reload
      $ sudo systemctl restart docker

- Then you should be able to have your master running:
$ docker-machine ls
NAME ACTIVE DRIVER STATE URL SWARM DOCKER ERRORS
black-pearl   -        generic   Running   tcp://192.168.1.99:2376   black-pearl (master)   v1.12.2

- Then make the other nodes join the party:
    * docker-machine create -d generic \
      --engine-storage-driver=overlay --swarm \
      --swarm-image hypriot/rpi-swarm:latest \
      --swarm-discovery="token://$TOKEN" --generic-ssh-user <youruser> \
      --generic-ip-address=192.168.1.198 \
      swarm2-pearl

- Then you should be able to have your other node running:
$ docker-machine ls
NAME ACTIVE DRIVER STATE URL SWARM DOCKER ERRORS
black-pearl    -        generic   Running   tcp://192.168.1.99:2376    black-pearl (master)   v1.12.2
swarm2-pearl   -        generic   Running   tcp://192.168.1.198:2376   black-pearl            v1.12.2

And so on....

Description

In a single (and geek) packaging you get: Infra:

  • 3 Raspberry Pi (mix of them)
  • Managed 8 Ports Switch
  • LCD screen to get the IP of the Master node.
  • Flexibility: add more node by adding more RPIs…

DevOps Environment

  • A fully functional Docker swarm cluster spread on X (here x=3) RPi nodes
  • A gitlab env. to host the SRC, Build and automatically test your code
  • Rules to automatically test your CI code on the swarm cluster
  • Collectd for remote monitoring with Grafana or your tool of choice (Graphite)
  • The Docker Swarm cluster is running on an Internal network using VLANs

To add:

  • A 2.5"HDD to host the GitLab DB for more reliability
