SIP call # 2 Agenda – Friday 07/01/22 (11:00am EDT)

ARCHIVE
Hi all, there was a request to post weekly SIP meeting agendas ahead of time. I'll post the agenda for tomorrow's meeting here but am wondering: should we post all agendas within this issue (for the sake of simplicity) or open a new issue for every agenda?

Tagging @Hero-Gamer here too. Personally leaning toward using just one issue, though I realize that could get messy. We could also use the Forum instead if GitHub doesn't feel like the right place for this.

Weekly Community SIP Call Agenda – 07/01/22 (11:00am EDT)

  • Intro/agenda overview (5 min)
  • Review latest SIP activity (5 min)
  • Community has the floor for brainstorming, discussing, and mobilizing support for SIPs and SIP ideas (30 min)
  • Discussion: Improving the voting process for SIP ratification

Note: This is currently the standard format for calls, but we anticipate it changing as the SIP process evolves. For example, once consideration advisory boards begin to review SIPs more actively, we will likely make more time for their commentary during these calls. If you have any suggestions or feedback for how to improve these meetings, please don't hesitate to share!

Thanks for this summary @Hero-Gamer !

Can you recall what was said about Hyper-chains and 2.1 - is there a dependency between the two?

Thanks for this summary @Hero-Gamer !

Can you recall what was said about Hyper-chains and 2.1 - is there a dependency between the two?

Quoting comments from Brice and Aaron from Hiro
Brice
I believe that hyperchains can be (and is being) implemented without 2.1, but there will be simplifications and improvements that can be made using 2.1's new features.
Aaron B
Yes -- that's pretty much correct. If the proposed SIP-015/2.1 changes don't happen, hyperchains would still be possible (though probably with a bad withdrawal UX), but we are working on porting the current hyperchains codebase over to a 2.1 assumption. The only thing really holding us back in this is our testing (and testnet) infrastructure

Hi all, posting agenda for today's meeting cc: @jennymith

Topic: General update + Bitcoin Derivation Path

SIP call # 4 Agenda – Friday 07/15/22 (11:00am EDT)

  • Intro/agenda overview (2 min)
  • Top-level Update on SIP related activity (5 min)
  • Things I will be working on (5 min)
  • Open Discussion & Community Presentation

Notes from today's Open Discussion

  • standardization Bitcoin derivation path: Jude explained of some of the possible solutions to the standardization of Bitcoin derivation path. But key important questions to ask:
  1. What are the Design goals?
  2. What problems are we trying to solve?
  3. How do we know when we've solved it?
  • RPC endpoint: @wileyj gauged if there is interests for adding more info for RPC endpoint - this will give more insight/analytics for miners (and others) about the blocks

Other general notes

  1. SIP calls is a great live forum to gauge interests for ideas you are thinking of ahead of time before committing big chunk of your time
  2. SIP calls is also a opportunity to ask around from the experts if the ideas you have can be done without SIP
  3. If there is anybody you would like to have on the SIP call please let me know!

Hi all, posting agenda for Friday's meeting cc: @jennymith
Link for Forum post: https://forum.stacks.org/t/05-weekly-sip-call-taproot-integration-sip-stacks-improvement-proposal/13452/2

Topic: Tarproot integration

SIP call # 5 Agenda – Friday 07/22/22 (11:00am EDT) - 12 attendees

  • Intro/agenda overview (2 mins)
  • Top-level Update on SIP related activity (5 mins)
  • Community Presentation: Taproot SIP by Rena @renashah (5-10 mins) - followed by open floor questions and Q&A (20-30 mins)
  • Open Discussion (tabling 1. SIP channel yes/no) - (5 mins)

Notes from the call

  1. Taproot integration will be one of the many (puzzle pieces) continuous effort to decentralize mining (by reducing barriers to mine, thereby increasing the number of medium~smaller miners & their profitability). We wanna trend towards a "custodianless" stacking.
  2. Jude @jcnelson invited Rena @renashah to be part of co-author for Taproot integration as the functionality already will be part of Stacks 2.1 upgrade. The draft SIP Taproot on Github will be closed.
  3. Rena brought up the topic of if there will be places in addition/other than Github to keep up with/participate SIP activities, which we mentioned that's part of the efforts such as, Ecosystem DAO, SIP channel in discord, Stacks Forum will assist.
  4. Idea of "push notification" in wallets to alert users to participate in vote for Stacks 2.1 upgrade was brought up by Rena, which we all thought was great, we will need the buy-in from wallet providers such as Hiro and Xverse, etc.
  5. Tabled whether having a SIP Channel in Stacks discord server is a good idea. Result: 1. Majority people think it is a good idea, and the amount of SIP related activities should warrant having it. 2. To have it under "Community" category rather than "Developers" so more people can access to it.

Topic: STX Mining report July 2022

SIP call # 6 Agenda – Friday 07/29/22 (11:00am EDT) - 9 attendees

  • Intro/agenda overview (2 mins)
  • Top-level Update on SIP related activity (5 mins)
  • Community Presentation: STX Mining Report by @mattystx @ (10-15 mins)
  • Followed by open floor community questions and Q&A (20-30 mins)
  • Open Discussion
  • Open invitations for CABs (2 mins)

Notes from the call

  • Lots of data point from @mattystx of how fee and profitability dynamic affects the participation of STX mining & a few different suggestions on how we can move forward.
  • One of the main goals to increase the small to medium miners ability to participate with low barriers of entry whilst all miners have good and as equal net profit margin as possible, which will naturally lead great decentralization of mining
  • "Decentralized mining pools" will further help to decentralize
  • @brainharrington suggested to have the equivalent in-depth report but for Stacking
  • Subscribe to MattySTX's tokenomic office hour every Monday here: https://community.stacks.org/events & follow his Twitter: https://twitter.com/MattySTX?s=20&t=tZjNckjJYZ2FerEYU3dUEQ
  • Other ways to support Matty's work is by staying actively engaged in the mining/tokenomics conversations, pointing out the strength, weakness, drawbacks etc, so collectively we can reach a well vetted thought-out improvement proposal.
  • Invites to join CABs (Consideration Advisory Boards) - More on this next Friday.

SIP call # 9 Agenda – Friday 08/19/22 (11:00am EDT) - 6 attendees

  • Intro/agenda overview (2 mins)
  • Top-level Update on SIP related activity (5-10 mins)
  • Open Floor Discussion (15-30 mins)
  • Invitations for CAB members (2 mins)

Notes from the call

  • BIG shout-out to @dartman10 for helping @friedger to find 10 contracts that uses SIP-016 metadata standard. This SIP should be approved and move to the next stage.
  • ALL links to previous recordings available now! Please scroll throughout this page.
  • In the open discussion time, I raised a question which was raised to me in DM, that the person wasn't aware Stacks 2.1 was a "hard fork", only found out later after someone had told him (this is not just a new user, this is someone with good stacks experience).
    • Therefore it would be fantastic if possible when the Stacks 2.1 communication ramps up, that it is made clear to the Stacks community Stacks 2.1 is a hard fork.
    • Currently Jude is working on Stacks 2.1 communication documentation, due to complete in the next 2 days
  • Core devs are heads down working hard trying to get Stacks 2.1 code complete
  • Then we went into some general hard fork definition in crypto space, quite interesting discussion.
  • Inviting people to CABs
  • Update what I'm working on in the near future.
  • Brought up the EcosystemDAO's work, if Stacks 2.1 voting will leverage keep using the existing voting mechanism or use EcosystemDAO's. If EcosystemDAO intents to propose their using their voting mechanism, then more dialogue and communications will be needed between the 1) core devs 2) marketing and 3) EcosystemDAO devs.
  • Announced next Friday 11AM EST @mattystx will present a talk about the draft plan/proposal re improving STX mining. This outcome proposal is from many Stacks Forum discussion, and lot of real-time discussion with many smart people involved past few months.

Link to Forum post: https://forum.stacks.org/t/10-weekly-sip-call-3-proposals-for-mining-dentralization-sip-stacks-improvement-proposal/13625

Topic: 3 proposals to mining decentralization

SIP call # 10 Agenda – Friday 08/26/22 (11:00am EDT) - 24 attendees

  • Intro/agenda overview (2 mins)
  • Top-level Update on SIP related activity (5-10 mins)
  • Main topic: 3 proposals to improve Stacks mining decentralization by @mattystx (30-40 mins)
  • Open Floor Discussion (10 mins)
  • Invitations for CAB members (2 mins)

Notes from the call

  • Detailed explanation about the 3 mining improvement proposals were presented clearly by Matty.
  • The most relatively low risk with medium impact level proposal out of the 3 proposals was "Dust mining" which
may see around 30 additional miners increase, with some trade offs. Please see resource link below to the report.
  • Matty Jude and a few others dig deeper into the finer details of the dust mining proposal for additional clarity. Everything seems to check out fine. However it does affect slightly reduces stacking rewards and/or increases STX inflation in short term, which requires emission schedule tweak, which was raised as a possible contention for some community members.
  • Matty still would like other people who chime in on the 3 proposals. @Hero-Gamer will facilitate getting more comments from Muneeb, Ryan Shea and anybody else alike.

SIP call # 11 Agenda – Friday 09/02/22 (11:00am EDT) - 22 attendees

  • Intro/agenda overview (2 mins)
  • Top-level Update on SIP related activity +invitation for CABs (5-10 mins)
  • Main topic: Safe Transfer SIP, Update on EcosystemDAO @radicleart (20 mins)
  • Open Floor Discussion (20 mins)

Notes from the call
SIP Activities update

Open Floor Discussion
Items on the agenda:
1. Safe Transfer SIP
2. EcosystemDAO update
3. . Stacks 2.1 education, communication
4. Voter turnout CABs activation

Safe Transfer

  • Safer way to transfer tokens/NFTs, addition to SIP-009 & SIP-010.
  • Stakeholders might impact or relevant mostly - NFT marketplaces, project creators
  • Risks: Mike could not think of much risk, there is more risks lay in not using this better transfer method.
  • Activation criteria was discussed with Jude. Mike will review it again and update accordingly if appropriate.

EcosystemDAO

  • Might be able to use it for Stacks 2.1 upgrade voting. Depending if development can get it in time.
  • Coming along nicely, many added functions, Designer to start working on it soon to improve UI.

Stacks 2.1 Upgrade

  • Voting criteria was discussed to be based on similar concept to last year, in additional this year people who are STACKING (people with long term interests) will be able to vote DIRECTLY using a Stacks wallet (the back end method was discussed, please watch video if you are interested to know)
  • Jenny mentioned we will be doing some survey to get indication of Stacks voter's literacy re 2.1, and get an indication of if they plan to turn up to vote
  • Next Friday Jude is available to do all CABs Q&A session. Will bring questions about CABs, and bring questions about Stacks 2.1 Upgrade. & Steering Committee.
  • Currently planning for 1 reward cycle (2 weeks). Though, some people saying they might miss voting if so. To be discussed further.
  • Still need to hash out the voting criteria, EcosystemDAO team will take a look and propose something. Need to prevent whales from manipulating the votes where possible. Therefore asking to be Stacking as one of the criteria is generally seemed acceptable in the meeting.

Voter turnout:

  • @Hero-Gamer tabled an idea to increase voter engagement which involves adding a "I VOTED" badge to our profile picture
(The context is, last year we had 28 votes, and we want to make sure each year we are improving the voter turnout, increase decision making process, involving and engaging whole of Stacks community.)
  • The concept aims for simplicity and effective social engagement, not wanting to add workload to people and still able to achieve effective impactful outcome. Can be just simple offchain jpegs.
  • However, there is still room for discussion for on-chain NFTs or Semi-FT. Community can have the opportunity to step up and take on this task.
  • Discussion with Hey Layer already underway to see if they would be interested in integrating this idea, but anyone from the community can chip in ideas or/and implementation work.
  • A post will go out on Stacks Forum to gauge further feedback and interests from the community.

Link to Forum post: https://forum.stacks.org/t/12-weekly-sip-call-cab-members-q-a-with-jude-sip-stacks-improvement-proposal/13688/2

Topic: CAB Q&A with Jude

SIP call # 12 Agenda – Friday 09/09/22 (11:00am EDT) - 33 attendees

  • Intro/agenda overview (2 mins)
  • Top-level Update on SIP related activity +invitation for CABs (5-10 mins)
  • Main topic: CAB Q&A with Jude (40 mins)
  • Open Floor Discussion: 2.1 Voting criteria proposal from Clarity Labs team (10 mins)

Notes from the call

  • SIP Activities update: 1. SIP013 waiting for CAB review. 2. SIP-019 will be presented by Rafael on 16th Sep 3. Safe Transfer SIP needs commenting
  • Threshold of votes within a CAB will need to be established to count as official CAB's consensus reached
  • Any topic if becomes growing interests that will be beneficial to form a CAB group, e.g. if NFT makes sense to be a CAB group could be formed.
  • When asked what happens if for example 3 out 5 CABs do not recommend a SIP, or if 2 out of 5 CABs do not recommend a SIP, Jude mentioned even if 1 CAB does not recommend a SIP, it may still mean the SIP Authors need to go back and work on it further based on the concerns. SIPs should be as universally not contentious as possible.
  • There can also be cases where maybe Steering Committee does not like a particular SIP for whatever reason, but the will of the people (i.e. perhaps all CABs and greater Stacks community wide) all want that particular SIP to pass, Steering Committee should in theory implement the will of the people, case dependent of course. SC is a steward for the direction of the Stacks community wanna go, not gatekeeper.
  • The same can be somewhat said about deciding the priorities of SIPs of what the core devs should work on.
  • When explained there are some coordination chairperson required to do, there was the sentiments that the CAB groups are there for their expertise&opinion for their particular field, therefore the sentiment was, wanna make sure Project Management responsibilities are minimized. Felt people wanna just be super clear what they need to do by when via how with who for example.
  • And because there was still some clarity CAB members would like to have, Jude will create additional "bylaw" template doc to help further clarify how an individual CAB group can work.
  • The general consensus felt perhaps reviewing Stacks 2.1 and offer early commentary might feel like doubling the work. So a pivot was suggest of perhaps just publishing the bylaws, decide what's in-scope, out-of-scope for CAB groups should serve sufficient as the Announcement of the CAB group establishment.
  • SJC brought up the conversation of what kind of Ethics CAB can should have influence on, and whether it should exist at all. After much discussion (we touched on many topics such as freedom to transact, censorship, human rights, moral police, etc etc. Best watch the recording), this particular CAB is to be discussed further in their own group first, and figure out what is the most suited appropriate way to have Ethics CAB exist with other CABs in this SIP process.

Suggested Next Steps
1) CAB Members to meet on a call this week
*Nominate/volunteer Chairperson based on Jude's bylaw guide https://gist.github.com/jcnelson/3fcc635ede20ce98d1eae60941eb127a
*Establish parameters (what's in-scope, out-of-scope, and any review questions that might help you during the process)
2) Publish the bylaw & names & bio of all CAB members on Stacks Forum & Github by 16th September ideally (or CAB please suggest a date by 22nd Sep based on your availability)
3) (Ethics CAB specific) Meet and discuss how Ethics CAB should co-existing with rest of other boards & in this SIP process

Video recording: https://youtu.be/sa51ZVQnncw

Next week SIP call topic: SIP-19 Rafael on to explain his SIP

Useful links:

------------------------------------------------------- admin related --------------------------------------------------
To keep this particular meeting efficient, suggest:

  • Reserve time for current CAB members to ask questions about the role, nail down admin stuff and goal for the next week or so.
  • Then get through some of the topics needed to get some feedback (such as 2.1 voting)
  • Then at the later part of the call, will open up the floor to anyone in the audience to ask anything about CAB, or bring up any topic they wish

Detailed Items on the agenda:

  • Quick intro for the less familiar faces - There be opportunity to read the bio about each CAB once announced. - Briefly touched on ✔️
  • Any questions about purpose of the boards - Touched on ✔️
  • CAB member's roles, responsibilities, expectation, time commitment - Touched on ✔️
  • CAB chairperson's roles, responsibilities, expectation, time commitment - Touched on ✔️
  • Any paperwork related questions? Such as Github, Stacks Forum, group review - Touched on ✔️
  • Any question about Ethics CAB from SJC - Touched on ✔️
  • Feedback need on Stacks 2.1 Voting criteria suggestion from Clarity Labs team - Touched on ✔️

Link to Forum post: https://forum.stacks.org/t/13-weekly-sip-call-topic-sip-019-notifications-for-token-metadata-updates-with-rafael-hiro-systems/13706

Topic: SIP-019-Notifications for Token Metadata Updates Rafael

SIP call # 13 Agenda – Friday 09/16/22 (11:00am EDT) - 28 attendees

  • Intro/agenda overview (2 mins)
  • Top-level Update on SIP related activity (5-10 mins)
  • Main topic: SIP-019 with Rafael (40 mins)
  • Open Floor Discussion: Diversity CAB setup, template for CAB activation (10 mins)

Notes from the call

  • SIP Activities update: 1. SIP013 waiting for Marvin to reply then CAB review. 2. SIP-019 will be presented by Rafael on 16th Sep 3. Safe Transfer SIP needs commenting

  • Main topic: Rafael gave an amazing presentation with great Slides that explain the SIP-019 metadata update notification really well. Many great Q&A too, with Gamma and Mike chiming in about their perspectives which generates some new thoughts and additional ideas to add to the current SIP. For full discussion please see the video.

  • Nick from Gamma (in Diversity CAB) brought up somewhat similar conversation to last week's Ethics CAB's whether it need to be setup as a CAB, or could it exist as Senior SIP Editor in some other forms to it's more advisory than a specific board that requires regular attendance and meeting, instead it could be more flexible but still actively involved in the SIP process. Jenny was open to the idea of having alternative setup and felt this topic was somewhat was gonna be brought up just a matter of time.
Jude's thought was more along the line of, it the SIP-000 guide is not restrictive as to the definition of Diversity has to be. Think there was a slight misunderstanding of what the Diversity CAB is about, Nick interpreted as more growth more business development related, but SIP-000 definition actually isn't so focused on that & actually Jude foresaw that the group can just run with the topic and come up with the actual scope of the CAB further than what it was written in SIP-000.
The conclusion of the discussion was, perhaps Diversity CAB can re-hash it out again allowing flexibility of definition of what Diversity CAB's goal/definition is, and we can discuss again if it suits being a CAB or alternative setup.

SIP call # 16 Agenda – Friday 10/07/22 (11:00am EDT) - 10 attendees

  • Intro/agenda overview (2 mins)
  • Top-level Update on SIP related activity (5 mins)
  • Main topic: Open Floor Discussion (22 mins)
  • Reminder to comment (1 min)

Notes from the call
Top level activities

  • This week the SIP call clashed with the online Bitcoin Unleashed (Builders' Edition) event, so we wanted to keep the meeting sharp and effective.
  • Some conversation re SIP-18 Structured Signed Messaging changes in the Hiro wallet let to the conversation of Non-structured Signed Messaging filed here: SIP describing Stacks message signing #90 @friedger happened to be on the call to explain this new SIP. After discussion with Jude, it appears to make sense if this standard were to just be included as part of the SIP-018 SIP-018 Signed Structured Data #57 (that's in the Activation-In-Progress stage) instead of spinning up a new SIP
  • SIP-019: @friedger had some comments about why SIP-019 data were stored onchain, he suggested might be better if data were just done via "get-notification-url". It was concluded that it makes sense, but will need to ask/discuss with Rafael in SIP-019: Notifications for Token Metadata Updates #72 to reach a final conclusion.

Open Discussion

  • SIP Author: @314159265359879 wanted to bring up a comment about BNS in the SIP open discussion space, the commentary were regarding some of the older ideas/comments from Friedger, and whether it can be something to be done for BNS v2 regarding a trait for marketplace functions. It was suggested it would be great if Werner can just write up a SIP! (which is amazing because at SIP world we wanna encourage and foster the culture of submitting SIP ideas, and have system in place to facilitate to take from idea to ratification in the next few quarters. @Hero-Gamer contacted Werner to pick this conversation up, maybe can be documented as a great example for community led SIP.

Other notes:

  • Call to comments on everything Stacks Forum, Github, etc.
  • 3 panels of CABs activation reminded.

SIP call # 17 Agenda – Friday 10/14/22 (11:00am EDT) - 14 attendees

  • Intro/agenda overview (2 mins)
  • Top-level Update on SIP related activity (10 mins)
  • Main topic: Open Floor Discussion (20 mins)
  • Reminder to comment (1 min)

Notes from the call
Top level activities

  • Hero welcomed Elena from Hiro for joining the call and taking an interesting in getting involved with Diversity CAB.
  • Hero gave an overview of all SIP activities. Mentioned SIP-013 was mentioned SIP-013 Semi-Fungible Token standard #42 (comment) and checked if Aaron is out til January, who else can pick up where Aaron left off for the review process. Brice volunteered to take a look.
  • Highlighted the community initiated SIP idea from Werner, which will improve the standardization of marketplaces in relation to BNS V2. This SIP effort is particular amazing because it is exactly what we wanna foster, having SIP ideas coming out from the community. We will be highlighting this as a blog to help others understand they can also come up with SIP ideas!
  • Touched briefly about the new Stacks Forum post which Jude asked if anybody has opposition to Stacks 2.1, without seeing the full written SIP, as full SIP will only get written up later. Igor mentioned if we can highlight anything contentious to the community. Jude mentioned most Stacks 2.1 are all improvements, not much contentious stuff in it.

Open Discussion

  • Muthu brought up the conversation about his idea of improving the nodes implementation that can be a future "Operation" SIP. His idea will improvement the practicality of self-verifying the chain, and improve self-sovereignty, which is a very key infrastructure. This SIP can be the first "Operation" SIP if passed.

Topic: Stx mining report Q3 2022

SIP call # 18 Agenda – Friday 10/21/22 (11:00am ET) - 32 attendees

  • Intro/agenda overview (2 mins)
  • Top-level Update on SIP related activity (10 mins)
  • Main topic: Matty's mining Q3 report (40 mins)
  • Open floor & Reminder to comment (5 min)

Notes from the call
Top level activities

  • Things earlier in the pipeline that worth highlighting are Werner's @314159265359879 SIP proposal, which is an organic community driven. Hero will find all the necessary support to help this SIP to go from the beginning to finish.

  • SIP-015 document (Stacks 2.1 upgrade) might be written up fairly soon, end of today or early next week. CABs can start reviewing it whilst the core devs get the codes to completion. As Jude is still SIP Editor, he will turn the SIP-015 into Accepted instead of going through the Draft stage. In the future once we have more SIP Editors officially inducted into the process, Jude will be able to step back from also being SIP Editor and just being in Steering Committee member.

  • @radicleart and @whoabuddy proposed organizing the “Traits list/deployed contracts" for some applicable SIPs so it’s easier for people to find Reference List of Traits for Mainnet and Testnet · Issue #94 · stacksgov/sips · GitHub therefore be used more in their contracts. Will be helpful to new and existing developers.

Main topic:

  • MattySTX's call Stacks mining topic, generally speaking the mining been decently healthy given the extend of the bear market, number of tx per block demand up (big part due to BNS), miners’ profitability healthy.
  • We still have relative low number of miners for the network, which we must improve on. This will helpfully be improved once Stacks 2.1 unlock more capabilities. Find Matty’s full mining Q3 report here:
    https://app.sigle.io/mattystx.id.stx/gsejMwBpUjsPAxMoPdLdW
  • Net net, there are many positive things from looking at the report, some things we must continue to improve

Other notes:

  • Stacks 2.1 "I voted" badge shown during the end of the call, working in progress.

Hi guys sorry for missing notes lately!

  • I'm trying to find a way of maximizing effectively whilst minimizing admin work, so I can spend more time on other area of SIP efforts.
  • So the conclusion I came to is use Twitter as the main place of sharing notes, and link everywhere else (Stacks Forum, here on Github) to Twitter. And will be smaller quicker notes.
  • Aimed at getting people more interested, attract them, and have people actually come on the call. Pls let me know if you think this direction is wrong.
